Here's a few pencil sketches sent in by bronze-dragonrider. I've scaled them down slightly to make things easier for peeps with small screens and/or dialup connections.

A portrait of Charlotte Church (http://www.imsmultimedia.co.uk/Images/Bronze/CharlotteChurch.jpg)
A dragon & rider (http://www.imsmultimedia.co.uk/Images/Bronze/Dragonrider.jpg)
A dragon skull (http://www.imsmultimedia.co.uk/Images/Bronze/DragonSkull.jpg)
A watch dragon (http://www.imsmultimedia.co.uk/Images/Bronze/WatchDragon.jpg)

I really like the head of the dragon, told you Bronze, t'other day in chat, of the dragon and rider, and I rather like the watch dragon, I can see you've really worked hard at getting the muscle structure right, it looks really good :D I'm not much of a fan of people drawings, but it is good, and skulls are boring ;) (seen heaps of sheep ones out on farms etc and they're nothing special :D )

Thanx very much Ian for putting these up for me. And thank you everyone else for your replies. You're very kind. Yeah skulls are kind of boring, I agree Jax. But to get muscle structure right, I need to get the skeleton right first. If anyone has any suggestions on what to change or improve, constructive criticism is very welcome. Right now I'm working on the rest of skeleton, and then onto the full dragon with muscles skin and all. Hopefully I can get it right this time :disguise:

the dragons are very well done though that is not how i see head knobs. i will be sending ian some of my pics soon though so you can see how i see them not that i think they are the same through all of my pictures. some are my earliest visions of how i saw annes dragons and look decidedly lizardlike rather than eqine.like the charolette church sketch. i cant draw peoples face they always look wrong.

Bronze-Dragonrider
9th January 2005, 12:21 PM
Thank you :) I look forward to seeing your drawings Amy B. I wasn't sure how the headknobs should be either. I got the look from the Diversity of Dragons cover. My dragons have been through many different incarnations over the past year and a half. At first when I knew nothing about what the Pernese kind should be they were like from Reign of Fire, then more Whelan like, and now I'm trying to get more accurate. I'd love to see how you imagine the head knobs ;)

How long have you been drawing Bronze? I know you're younger ;) but I'm amazed - truly! :D Also very jealous of course :D
I remember seeing a book when I was doing my nanny course, of a girl whose mother kept all of her drawings from when she started upwards, and this girl was a huge horse fan, and it just shows all her different tries at drawing horses as she grew older and older, it's really very impressive too, seeing what she was drawing at age 4 to ago 15... :D

Bronze-Dragonrider
9th January 2005, 01:03 PM
I've been drawing since I was 2. My mom and grandparents grab any that I don't like and put them in a file, because they know if they don't get it quick it'll go in the recycling bin. (Not the garbage, I hate wasting paper)

Very good, Bronze-D! Of those drawings the Watch Dragon is my favorite. When I showed the wifey the Dragon and Rider, which I believe you are using for your avatar, she said, "His dragons have long legs."

Well, that's what she said. She also liked your Watch Dragon.

Keep drawing! :good:

I *LOVED* the watch dragon. Amazing.

I had a couple issues with the dragon and rider picture, though they might just be ME having problems. I pictured the proportions between dragon and rider to be MUCH different. In the DLGP, the rider was TINY in comparison with the full grown dragon. So, unless the dragon is Ruth... or it was not intended to be Pernese... I have issues. ;) Because of the smallness, the legs ARE much too close together IMHO. Almost as though the dragon would trip if it tried to launch.

Bronze-Dragonrider
9th January 2005, 11:03 PM
thank you everyone. And I'm honored that you liked it enough to show it to your wife, Wolf :) The Dragon and rider one is kind of an experimenting picture. I actually dislike it alot, except for the head. The reason the legs are like that is because I thought they might be something like a kangaroo because they can jump very well, and thought thats what dragons would need to get into the air. But it ended up looking overly awkward and silly. And thanx for your ideas Pariah, I always like to have input. You're right, the legs do look too close together, especially so when he is bent over sitting. The reason for his size is because I go by the feet scale, which is confirmed by Anne, instead of meters which it says in the guide. It is a very drastic change, and it did take some getting used to for me. I have another drawing in the works that you might agree with more.

Mausey
9th January 2005, 11:55 PM
While looking a bit awkward (the front legs especially) the rider and dragon would be about the size of the original dragons. Many times it was said they were about the same height through the shoulders as a horse. So the proportions would be about right. The "modern" dragons of course would be much bigger.

Very well done. About the only things I can draw that are recognizable are horses heads and grain elevators.

Grain elevators? Ooookaaaay! *Backs away slowly.*

Ooh, can we see some of your drawings, Mausey? I see lots of grain elevators around where I live, I like 'em.

I measured that dragon in at around 25 feet, the size of a modern green or very small blue. The Originals were only 12 feet. His shoulder in the pic is a bit higher than a horse's so that shows I got something wrong in translating the proportions. Thanx for pointing that out. :)

Jax

I like the proportions of the Ramoth and Lessa, pic! Though She is sposed to be the biggest dragon and it doesn't look like there's enough room for her to have anyone else sitting on her - Lessa looks cool too *waves back* I also like the bleeding rose, and I like your dragon better now that he's coloured! :D

Well the Ramoth one is an older one I did on my computer, so its not very accurate. Far too large, un-equine, too long of a tail... but its a dragon, so I thought I'd put it on here anyway. I'm glad that you like it :)

Bronze-Dragonrider

Well most of these I'd drawn awhile ago, I just had to rummage through my pile of drawings to find some decent ones. Only the dragon heart one is new, I did that just a few days ago. But I'd never have the patience to do all of those in a row

I gotta know Bronze, how did you mirror the dragons? They look perfect!

Bronze-Dragonrider
1st February 2005, 08:14 PM
hehe, I did a little computer work with that :D I started off drawing both, then realized that it would never look perfectly symmetrical hand drawn. So I just drew one, scanned it in, copied the image and flipped it, then did a little tweaking to make the tails look like they were twined instead of overlapped.

If you're talking about the one I did for Something Evil, he gave me a description of a dragon he made up and it said that there were spikes from head to tail, so I followed those instructions. It wasn't meant to be pernese.

Jax
4th March 2005, 09:48 PM
 but Bronze, you have them on your dragons as well as the firelizard (is the firelizard what you drew for SE?)

Bronze-Dragonrider
4th March 2005, 10:17 PM
oh ok. Well the ridges go from just behinf the headknobs to the base of the neck, none along the back, and start up again behind the wings to the end of the tail.

maiken
7th March 2005, 10:16 PM
The firelizard is exactly as I imagined them Bronze.

As for the Ridges, I thought that Anne said that the rider was seated between the last two neck ridges? Right? or was it First two?

Ian
8th March 2005, 02:19 PM
Yup, Pernese dragons definitely have neck ridges, so it's quite likely that they extend down the tail as well.

Btw Bronze, Something Evil is a girl!

Jax
8th March 2005, 02:35 PM
I wish I could draw, then I'd show you what I interpret ridges as, those spikes aren't what I pictured at all!!
I think I kinda of imagined like a hardish softish gristley type ridge, like umm perhaps 20cm long with a lip - almost like a saddle....

You're too kind :O Well it's kind of difficult to give tips and advice online without making a tutorial. I'd never thought of doing something like that before, I just might do that :D But for now, the basic things are to draw lightly as possible at first. If you draw with hard defined edges, if there is a mistake it's impossible to erase the line completely. When starting off a drawing, use basic shapes, not doing the exact ouline of the object. Just build it up progressively, and when you get to the form that you like, erase the extra sketchy lines. And for more details, use reference! Theres absolutely nothing wrong with 'copying' from life, not everything has to come from your imagination. Every artist that I know of uses lots of reference photos to get a clearer idea of what to put on the page.

I hope these things can help out a bit for now, and if theres anything else you want, feel free to PM me :)

Advice? Please?

Very good job
Sorry, I didn't mean to skip over your question earlier :O

Faces are one of the most complex parts of a human. Its difficult to instruct just 'how' to do it. The best thing to do is study faces and pictures, and try to duplicate them. Its always best to study from life.

But here's some rough guidelines for dimentions of faces:

looking at a head face on, a face is usually the equivelant of 5 eyes across. The size of one eye between both eyes, and also on both sides.

The eyes are roughly the midpoint of the head, between the very top and the chin.

The height of the face (between the chin and hairline, unless a person is balding) is divided into equal thirds. The nose fits in the middle third.

Between the bottom of the nose and chin is also divided into equal thirds, and the lips fit in the middle part.

The top and bottom of the ears should line up with the eyebrows and bottom of the nose.

Keep in mind that all this is subject to subtle change with variations in each person. But its just the approximate basics for a face.

Thank you :) It's not even half done. I need to add thread, a bit of smoke from the smoldering bits. The main part is the shading on the dragon, need to add shadows and some hide color variation. Once the shading is done I'll get rid of the sketchy pencil lines. Also should put a better sky background. I used a simple cloud filter in photoshop just for now.

What do you mean? It says on deviantart that most nudity is accepted there, as the human body has been a source of art inspiration for thousands of years, and as long as it's not used in an overly gratuitous fasion, it's alright as long as you put a Mature Content Advisory warning on it.

It is extremely difficult to do any artwork on it without a stylus/tablet. I got Adobe Photoshop elements (the lowest kind, it's up to 8.0 now) free with my Wacom tablet. My tablet is just a small one and cost about $160, but I think some places sell them as low as $100. You can probably find a tablet at a good computer software/hardware store.

This is very prelim, but before i go on i want an expert's opinion. This is of course how i view Kris and i haven't begun on the coverall yet - i just want to get her face right first (before i do Zainal). It's in 'Description of Zainal' category under Freedom's forum, if you want to go have a look.

What do you think bronze (and everyone else)?:erm:

I've been wanting to post this one for awhile, it's my favorite drawing I've ever done. But I can't scan it because it's too big, so here's a photo, although an awful one. http://www.deviantart.com/view/23480471/

Here's another pic I've been working on the past few days, glad to be able to draw at a leisurely pace. Still not TOTALLY done, I'd like to add shadows, but I thought I'd post it now in case I ruin it  http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/23486095/

Thanks everyone :D I don't think I'll color it, however much I would love to. I'm still very much a novice in digital painting and I NEED direct visual reference for colors (the picture I took it from was covered in scales, so that throws it off alot) if I do it from my head it looks preposterous

Thank you very much! That's the thing I was really aiming for, so I'm glad that I could achieve it :D Of course, there's still alot that could be improved (very critical eye) But it came out alot more satisfying that usual.

I just had an idea... It won't turn out as good, but I could do a quick color thing just using color variations in photoshop, rather than painting it all by hand... that way I could colorize the whole thing in 5 minutes :D
