Are there any characters in Anne's books that just drive you crazy? Are they just too perfect, or too boring, or have they saved the world too many times?
Probably my least favorite character is Nancia from PartnerShip. She's just too good, too naive, and she just doesn't seem like the kind of brainship you'd like to learn more about.
And then there's Aramina. I liked her in The Girl Who Heard Dragons but not so much in Renegades and Dolphins, especially in the later. I don't know, there's just something about her ... She went and gave up a life in the Weyr and the possibility of riding a dragon to go live in the middle of nowhere with Jayge. I guess I can sort of understand why she did what she did, but if I were in her situation I'd've stayed at Benden. And the word I used to describe her when I read Dolphins, well, let's just say it's wasn't complimentary.
So, how about you?

If you had hundreds of voices having conversations in your head day in, day out, day and night, would you really want to stay at the Weyr? I know I couldn't. I liked Aramina in the short story, I felt sorry for her in Renegades when she just wanted to escape everything. I wish we could have seen more of what made her become so paranoid.

My problem is, I like the antagonists. I really don't hate any of them, but..

Well, I do dislike Tarvi. I feel for him, really. Sallah was a wonderful woman---if only he'd realized that sooner! :redfruit:

Aramina, Jaxom, Robinton in MHOP, Brekke, F'lon, Lessa post-Dragonflight, F'lessan, Tai (LOATHE her!), Sebell (possibly I'm more indifferent to him), Piemur, every single character in Dragonsblood and most of 'em in Dragon's Kin, and Tarvi Andiyar-Telgar (what a flake.)

Sometimes Tia gets on my nerves as she and Alex are a little TOO perfect (I blame that on Anne and Misty reinforcing each others worst tendencies), but there really aren't any Ship-series characters I HATE. I actually rathe like Nancia because for once there's a main character who's not Ms. Perfect or Spunky or Or-So-Clever (ie Not A Mary Sue.) Also that one gets interesting three-dimensional bad guys who aren't just TEH EVIL!!!!!eleventy because, well, they are.

Not only is Nancia not perfect, she actually makes mistakes! I like that she has kept in touch with her family, even though she's been a shell since she was born, unlike Tia.

I won't mention any villains, because obviously they're SUPPOSED to be hated. Out of the other characters, it's mostly M'hall that makes me feel weird. In DragonsDawn and Dragonsblood he seems to be fine, but in the middle, during The Second Weyr, he just seems sooo creepy. First he sounds like a h*rny uncontrolled teenager hopping from flight to flight and getting off, and later it almost borders on sounding like he's stalking Torene... I know he was in love with her and just wanted to be nearby when she needed him, but still... the whole way he feels through that story is creepy :erm:

Aramina sort of drives me batty. Strange thing is, I can't figure out why. I can see why she doesn't want to live in a weyr. Not being able to turn off the dragon voices and hearing them constantly could make life miserable. I even understand, a bit, why she's so over protective of her kids. Just something "off" about her. *shrugs*

I liked Mirrim until she started being an idiot. Though it should be pointed out that in Dragon Song, her response when Menolly told her about Jaxom impressing Ruth was "Now why would he go and do a thing like that?". So at least her opinion of him is generally consistant.

Yeah, why Moreta? I think she's one of the best-written characters Anne's ever done, Beyond Between notwithstanding.

Aramina (I can understand why she left the Weyr, but not why she was so overprotective of Readis), Brekke (doormat), Rowan in the later books, Killashandra in parts of Crystal Line, Jaxom (Gary Stu extraordinaire), Lessa at her worst (I'm not particularly keen on the couples Lessa-F'lar, Killashandra-Lars Dahl and Rowan-Jeff - too similar, too "taming of the shrew-ish").

Jaxom, Brekke, Piemur, Aramina, Tai, F'lessan, Menolly (which is a shame, because the Harper Hall trilogy were the first Pern books I read, and I really liked her... when I was 12), Lessa, F'lar (except in the early books; F'lar and Lessa were hardcore in the early books), Zulaya, Nimisha, Damia, Rowan, Sara (from Restoree), and Kris (*STAB*). I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

The list basically includes most of the female protagonists (I say "most" because I haven't read any of the series outside Pern, the Talents, and Freedom), who not only all end up pregnant but get completely whacked-out as a result, most of the male protagonists, and all the really saccharine, Mary Stu/Gary Stu types who, Beneath Their Harsh Exteriors, Are Really Gentle and Caring Inside, But If You Piss Them Off, Watch Out! The only ones that stick out in my mind as bugging me are Aramina (she just seemed so winey), Jayge (I just saw no reason to like him and he got such a biuld up), Jaxom (Gary stu) and Piemur after Dragonsinger. I can't really think of any from the Freedom series, though that maybe because I haven't read them in a while.

Lorana (big surprise)
Kindan (something about him just drove me to my wit's end)
Kris (from the Freedom series)
Aramina
Jeff (from The Rowan b/c he just seemed too perfect)

F'lessan and Tai didn't seem that bad. Rowan got on my nerves at times during The Rowan but I liked her all the same. I really want to read more of The Rowan Series. I have To Ride Pegasus and Pegasus In Space to read. I don't have the one that comes between them. I'm sure that a character in those books will annoy me.

Killashandra really really :erm: trying to think of a suitable discription without swearing. . . . . . .

Lessa was like . . . what the? I liked her when i first read the series at 13, same with Menolly.

And Acorna. . . what is with her? besides the whole horn in head thing. The first couple of books were ok. . . . the others egh.

Characters that annoy me. Sometimes this changes, especially depending on which book, but:

Lorana
Aramina
Kindan
F'nor
Nian
Tai
M'hall (ugh)
Torene
Brekke (sometimes)
Neru/N'ru (also sometimes, mostly because he Impressed a metallic dragon, and the whole "dreaming of being a dragonrider since he was a kid" thing and ending up impressing a bronze.)
