I would like to read some good pern books.
Right now I'm kind of a novice.
I've read
Dragon Song,
Dragon Singer,
Dragon's Drum
and the master harper of pern.
I've read some of dragons Flight but had to take it back to the library. I'm in need of good books for the year could someone please help.

The White Dragon and the Dolphins of Pern are always held up by many as two of the best books, and I suggest reading Dragonflight fully if you can.

Personally, I suggest that you read all of Dragonflight, then follow the published order as much as possible.

I suggest following this order (http://pern.srellim.org/readorder.htm), though personally i would read The White Dragon third...

And if you can take Dragonflight out of the library again, I suggest you read Dragonquest next.

Chronicles of Pern: First Fall and Dragon's Dawn are both good, and explain a bit of how it all began. But yeah, publishing order is good to start with.

The first 3 would be good to read, Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and the White Dragon. Another very good one is All The Weyrs of Pern, my personal favorite. But ALL of them a good read :D

Unfortunately no, I don't know any good Pern books...

They're all GREAT! :D

They're all great books. Moretta and Nerilka's Story are both very good. They're long before Lessa and F'lar and tell why Moretta is such a revered rider. Even if they don't really believe it was a female rider, after all, Queen's don't fly.

Yeah. I agree with Bronze-Dragonrider, Hans, and Mausey. They are all EXCELLENT books. I haven't read all of them yet, but that's hardly required to know how great they all are.

I will admit, though, that there are certain books that I am looking forward to reading more than others. The White Dragon and The Dolphins of Pern are two examples.

A word of advice: be sure to read Dragonsdawn BEFORE you read First Fall. And it might be good the read Dragonflight and Dragonquest before you read Dragonsdawn.

Back in May, after I was introduced to Pern by the Harper Hall Trilogy, I read Dragonflight--the last book I was able to read from the school library before it closed down for the summer. After I turned in Flight, I went to the local public library to get Quest. I couldn't find it, so I decided to read First Fall instead. I got so confused as to what was happening that I turned it in before I was finished and left Pern for a few months, during which I started reading Alan Foster's Humanx Commonwealth series. I tried First Fall a couple months ago after reading Quest and Dawn and was able to read it joyfully.

:ok: :) :good:

It's Dragon Drums, NOT dragon's drum.

Indeed we don't! :ok: :good:

These books seem to draw me to them like a powerful magnet. I have to strain myself so that I don't begin reading one before I'm finished with the one I'm reading currently. :banghead:

I don't think I have ever been drawn to a book series in such away before.

:heartbeat

I WANT A DRAGON AND A FIRE LIZARD!!!!Hey Feena, go here (http://annemccaffreyfans.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=30) for dragons and fire lizards. Aww man, but i am already reading FF, and havent read D'Dawn (as anne abbravites it)

The best thing to do with those 2 books is read 'The Survey P.E.R.N.' then Dragonsdawn and then the rest of Chronicles of Pern: First Fall. Because the last 3 short stories in FF occur after D'Dawn I beleive, and it makes a bit more sense while you're reading it.

Which one do they find the robot? I read some of that one.

NeouofPern
13th January 2005, 11:50 PM
It's not a robot, per say. It's a huge computer system with artifical intelligence. And I believe at the end of Dragonsquest... Am I correct?

Bronze-Dragonrider
14th January 2005, 12:02 AM
They find AIVAS (Aritcicial Intelligence Voice Address System) at the very end of Renegades of Pern, and carries on directly after that in All the Weyrs of Pern.

NeouofPern
14th January 2005, 12:03 AM
But Aivas is in many books... Gah... o_0

Ravien Coromana
14th January 2005, 12:09 AM
But, it IS NOT in any of the First/Main 3 of the books.

Bronze-Dragonrider
14th January 2005, 12:23 AM
Aivas is only in 4 books. Discovery in the last part of Renegades, very prominant in AtWoP, and only mentioned in Dolphins of Pern and Skies of Pern. Considering what an important role he played in the fate of Pern, 4 out of what is about to be 27 stories (including short stories), thats not very much. I know that alot of people dislike Aivas, but I still like him.

NeouofPern
14th January 2005, 12:27 AM
Whoops, sorry. I need to reread the series. And I'm not sure I liked Aivas, but he was vitally important.

Feena_bronze_rider
14th January 2005, 02:38 AM
I didn't like Avias... I want Pern to stay fantasy like forever. They never destroy thread all the way do they!? That would mean that the Dragon's would have no place!

NeouofPern
14th January 2005, 02:44 AM
Not that I want to start an argument (I wanted Pern to stay pure and Thread fighting forever too), but Aivas did help the Pernese with tumors, diseases, cancer, etc.

Bronze-Dragonrider
14th January 2005, 03:03 AM
Well I can't say that I liked the idea of dragons never fighting thread again, it deprives the us of a very threatening and captivating antagonist, but realistically, that's what is in their best interests. Even though it gives them an honorable place on Pern, do dragonriders truly want to put their lives in jeopardy for 50 years? Every dragon and rider wants thread to be annialated forever, and Aivas helped them achieve that on a one-time-only opportunity. Dragons will still have a place, even though its not as 'Heroic'. Pern will still be novel worthy post-thread, many of the novels already do not involve thread, and there can continue to be more. But everyone has their own opinion on the matter, each of which I very much respect.

AKA: Now don't fight children. :D

Feena_bronze_rider
14th January 2005, 03:21 AM
Can't they just kill Avias and go back to being the OLD pern even if that pern doesn't envolve thread?

NeouofPern
14th January 2005, 03:26 AM
Nope. I can't say anymore without spoiling the rest of the book.

Feena_bronze_rider
14th January 2005, 03:32 AM
NYAGAAAA! I can't stand it! I'm out of money and I haven't been to the library! Gya! I NEED PERN BOOKS!

Bronze-Dragonrider

AKA: Now don't fight children. :D

Wasn't fighting, just offering opionions and viewpoints, isn't that what forums are for? Like I said, I respect everyones personal ideas. :)

Feena_bronze_rider

I didn't think any one was fighting... But I don't think much about normal stuff any way... mostly just about how to get a bronze fire lizard out of th books...

Hans

The name is spelled AIVAS which is an acronym for: Articial Intelligence Voice Activated System.

It appears in

Dragonsdawn
Chronicles of Pern (The Dolphins Bell, story also published as a seperate book)
The Renegades of Pern
All the Weyrs of Pern
Dolphins of Pern
The Skies of Pern
It is mentioned in Dragonseye/Red Star Rising.

Great now I know which ones not to read!

Bronze-Dragonrider
14th January 2005, 10:25 PM
Oh geez. I forgot the ones in the *origin* thanx Hans. But even so Feena, Aivas plays very little part in those early ones. Just because a book mentions Aivas, does not make it a bad book. D'Dawn is a very essential part, if you are interested in the history of Pern. There are some which I favor more than others but they are ALL excellant novels. Perhaps read a little more about it before you make a definate decision. I'd hate to see a fan biased against a number of books, there are alot of very good parts in those particular ones that I wouldn't want a fan to miss out on.

Ok... I'll read them... Just cuz I want to know more about Menoly and Sebell getting together. I predicted that from the first time They talked about Sebell and Menoly on the same page! (Before I thought she would get together with Elgion, T'gellan or Robinton!)
