I just remembered that in the Dragonlover's Guide, it mentions serpentine, rather large beasts living in Pern's oceans. Or it does somewhere. I recall it. Perhaps a more water friendly form of Pern's orginal fire dragons, having never crawled out of the sea? Any ideas?

I think you must be remembering what it said about tunnel snakes. This passage comes directly from the DLG : "Snakes with turtlelike faces existed in the jungles. Most of these were poisonous and left track marks from the toe teeth along their length on those creatures unlucky enough to be caught in their coils. Similar snakes that grew up to elaphatine size lived in the rivers and seas."

Yah, that's it. But if they're so huge, why are they never mentioned?

Maybe they live deep in the ocean, and not anywhere near where the stories have been taking place...<G> Can't just say, Oh, there's a giant tunnlensake out there, then have the characters go somewhere else and forget about it. Bit of a non sequitor if it's not part of the plot...

Yes, those things would probably rarely if ever come to the surface, depending if they're air breathers or not. So it would not be common for people to run into them on the open seas. But it would be VERY interesting to have it become part of a story one day :D

Dragonrider: WHAT'S THAT?
Dragon: Is it edible?
