Just had our monthly grocery delivery from the Supermarket! Very handy! No lugging about of masses of those essentials that'll keep through the month, just one bulk delivery and then trips to local shops for extras... Usefull but of course, without the option of picking out your own fresh fruit and veg. No viewing of those new products on display or a general feeling of the special offers available!

Is online grocery shopping the way forward? Or are you sticking with your trolley and personalised approach?

I've never done this and I don't think it's available in my area. However...if it were, I would definitely consider using a service like that...save the hassle of traffic and gas usage. :ok:

Have a glance online at your local stores website... You might be suprised?

I don't do it as I like wandering through the supermarket...although the walk back home with too many bags is never fun.

I have considered shopping online and know that many of my SO's shift-working workmates do it, but I do like to be able to compare prices in person.
I've got some great bargains in the meat section from sifting through all the containers rather than just taking what's on top. And I also have the option of getting the stuff that's been marked down because it's coming up to the end of it's shelf life - what do I care about that when I freeze all my meat and defrost it the day I'm going to eat it?

i always walk throughthe store when shopping.

Because i always impulse buy... see what i want and get it

And because i work in a superkmarket and i know what is done to... (only kidding!)

I just prefer to do my own shopping and save the delivery charge!

I quite like the grocery shopping. And I'm particularly fussy about fruit/veg/meat. I go to the local farmers market (in the middle of Bristol!) when I can, to get the best :D
Plus, do they really give you the best stuff online, or just whatever they can lay their lands on?

AND - I love George at Asda! :hopping:

I like shopping myself, I get to visit with lots of people and I get to choose what to bring home. Our one grocery store will shop and deliver for seniors and shut-ins, but I don't know if it's offered to everybody.

Yeah, our local home town grocery will shop for shut-ins. Not so much otherwise.

There is a large chain store that will shop and deliver for anyone. For free I guess. I have only ever used it for the time the check out boy was chit chatting and didn't put all my stuff in the bag, causing me to leave without stuff. Then they deliverede because I was angry.

I tried online shopping with a couple of different stores, but in both cases I found it actually took longer when I factored in wading through menus trying to decide if "rocket" was a "salad vegetable" or a "specialist vegetable" and also waiting in forhe delivery.

<Snip>The browsing and impulse buying were our big downfall! We now spend a great deal less on groceries, even when you factor in the wine we buy

There are people who would be happy to spend the money they would need to have the groceries delivered on actual groceries....

There are people who would be happy to spend the money they would need to have the groceries delivered on actual groceries....As I say, by ordering online, we save far more than the delivery charge. If people want to save money, this is, in the long run, one way to do so. Bulk buying from wholesalers is another I suppose?

I shop most of my shopping at the grocery store less than 3 minutes' walk away. So far the delivery charge has been too expensive for me to want to try it from a supermarket a bit farther away.

I shop by what's in the sale ads and what I need, and what looks good at the store. I want to pick my own meat, veg, etc.

i have to say i've never shopped online for groceries..everything else, yes..but not groceries... :) i drive past the grocery store every day on the way home for work so there is no excuse not to.. :)

Everything else, however, i'd have to drive into the city to get and in the winter.. no thanks!

One of the "big" supermarkets in my area, Acme, owned by Alberson now offers online shopping. I think the delivery fee is $9.95. They also offer online shopping with you picking it up, for $4.95.

I shop at Acme, and its all of 5 minutes away....so....no online for me. As others have said, I like to "LOOK" at my fruits, veggies, meats etc. Plus, browsing the shelves sometimes gives me menu ideas...always a plus.

Not too much impulse buying, with hubbie being a diabetic. If it isn't in the house, he won't eat it!!! ;)

I prefer to do my shopping in person (okay, there are some things we order online...from the British Food shoppes, so we can get things like marmite and Cadbury's Drinking Chocolate). HOWEVER, for shut-ins, and people who don't like going out in the winter, I think online shopping is a wonderful thing.

It's not offered here, so no online grocery shopping for me. ;) If it was, I might use it for staples and non-perishables, but would rather shop for the rest myself.

Now the shop online and then pick it up yourself option would be neat for when you're short on time. :ok: Not so expensive either.

Even though I don't do the cooking, I do do the shopping and I like to see the carton, box, can, whatever, to make sure it's not damaged... Don't know if that helps in the freshness of an item, but it makes me more secure to pick each item by myself...

Actually, in my store, it's usually the Suits who cause the traffic jams in the isles... and they can't answer a customer question nine times out of ten.

I go shopping myself, get stuck in looooong queues (<<<<<----hard word to spell! :faint: ) always with one screaming kid in front of me, one behind in a buggy who likes to kick legs and my kids running riot because I wont buy them 3 packets of sweets each. I pay, pack my stuff, return to the checkout for bags to replace the ones with snapped handles and walk home. I really love my shopping trips

Yes, I was as oblivious as Mystique, and it seems prekharper too.

I had nooo idea. I wouldn't buy food online. I wouldn't buy a car online either, though it seems people do.

But yes, I did buy my cat online. (Shh.)

On the OKT I stated that, but when I came over here decided to change my location. It makes it easier for those who see me on AIM, MSN, and LJ, since I use Amishlurker in those places.

I Havent done it in a while, but a few years ago i lived in a part of town .. well away from the beaten track and i nearly always worked odd hours!

so in order to maximise my few days off work, i did order my shopping online through tesco.com.

it worked quite well, the only problem as i saw it was that you couldnt be picky (as you do) when choosing goods in the shop, because some tesco bod did it for you!!!

oh well they always delivered ontime and it worked .... mind you those were the early days of online shopping i s'pect they're much busier nowadays!

Hmmm, I've never heard of online grocery shopping before, but it could definitely be useful sometimes! Since no one in this household owns a car, and I don't like doing any major shopping at the local grocery store, arranging trips into the city Supermarket is very awkward. I AM very picky on the quality of fruits and vegitables, but it might be a sacrafice I'd be willing to make.

Since I work at a super center store it's easier for me to just pick stuff up as I'm leaving for the day. We have unusually wide aisles in our frozen foods dept so I can park my storage M-cart at the edge with just enough room behind it to work, and still have two shopping carts pass by on the other side.
