llamas on pern. I was playing the game yesterday and when i was at fort hold this guy was after llama hair. which leads me to this question is there llamas on pern. and when i got the llama hair for him i found it in the heardbeast pen, so does that mean heardbeast have some thing to do with llamas.

or is llamas just in the game for no reason at all

Well, I have to say, I wondered the same thing, but never did look it up.

I so not know that I have ever seen a reference to Llama in any of the books.

But then, I was not looking either.

I don't recall any mention of llamas in the books at all. Now, my memory isn't perfect, but I'm fairly certain that after my re-read this year, I would have remembered llamas.

Maybe, that was supposed to be L'lama's hair? You know, L'lama rider of blue Camelth.

It couldn't have been L'lama, because you find the hair in the beast pen....so I guess there must be llamas somewhere on Pern. If this helps at all, on p. 17 of the DLG second edition, in the first paragraph on the top right with the drawings of cows, it reads, "...a cow was capable of brining colts and young llamas to term...".

I also found this on a Pernese dictionary:

Burdenbeast: Descendants of the Terran llama. Used for both pack animals and for wool production. ICly called Burdenbeasts or llamas.

Durnit, that's the one I was gonna post  I'm not sure how reliable the source is, but I don't find it unlikely that there are llamas on Pern.

*ahem* Llama LIKE creatures. None of the beasties on Pern are exactly like their terran counterparts. (for instance, to the pernese "llamas" spit lust?)

Well that's true, they've all been adapted to suit a Pernese diet/climate. But since they came directly from llamas and not mixed with any other animal, and only had minor genetic adjustments, I don't see what's wrong with still calling it a llama. Besides, there are many KINDS of llama to begin with anyway, aren't there? This is just another sort.

There are four kinds of llama: alpaqa (sp?), guanaco, viquna (sp?) and then of course llama. Alpaqa and llama are both domesticated.

And I didn't even think to wonder about the llama hair when I came to that part in the game. There are so many other weird things going on in the game, so llama hair didn't seem weird at the time. :erm:

But what are the wherries doing in the caves? And the size of the tunnel snakes?

not sure about the werries thats just weird when you think about the tunnel snakes they have been in there for over 20 years odd because it states that the caves have been sealed up longer then the dragonriders (can't remember the names) have been there which would mean they would have had a long time to grow.

And i noticed the llama refrence because i adore llamas to the point that im going to go on a road trip to see one

:erm: Alpacas, Guanacos, and Vicunas aren't Llamas... However, Llamas and Alpacas are both domestic descendents of Guanacos (I think.)

The four llamas and two camels are camelids: members of the biological family Camelidae, the only family in the suborder Tylopoda.
For an easy link to the article click here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camelidae

My big heavy book on mammals (Die grosse Enzyklopädie der Säugetiere, edited by David Macdonald) says that it has long been believed that llama and the alpaca are descendents of the guanaco, but it is now being doubted - they are now thinking that the alpaca could be a mix of vicuna and llama (or guanaco).

No idea why wherries would be in the caves, they should be out in the open... As for the size, Aren't wherries supposed to look something like turkies but roughly the size of ostriches?

If anyone is able to get a screencap of a wherry from the game I would be VERY appreciative :D

I was actually talking about the size of the tunnel snakes. They are huge!

Oh right  I saw one screencap, and yeah, they ARE big! Then again, they are varried sizes, in either 'Survey' or D'Dawn, they said that there were some land based ones that were 10 meters long, and some marine ones that were elaphantine size. But the ones you'd find in the caverns I wouldn't think they'd be over 5 feet long... after all, killing tunnel snakes is a job that some young boys are supposed to do!

Thank you! :good: Is that the one on the first page after the tunnel snake? Where's the feather fuzz? It almost looks like a mini dragon without the birdish wings
