View Full Version : Grazing...?

All through the books they go on about the Linyaari grazing, as well as the Elders? (I forget their name and I only read them lastnight  ) The 4 legged ones that still look like bearded unicorns.
The unicorns I can picture grazing, but I simply cannot see a Linyaari grazing, what do they do?
Do they fold in half, squat or go down on all fours? Do they pick the grass with their hands and then eat the grass from their hands?
How do they eat it? :erm:
Just to be perfectly clear here - just in case, I haven't read Acorna's children yet and am doing a reread from Search onwards so that I can read it. So, no spoilers or I'll smash ya! ;)

Ancestors ;)
I just saw them picking the grass, then eating it, purely described as 'grazing' because they are equine-like...

Jax, I wondered about that myself and finally decided they must just pick it with their hands and wander around munching on it. Maybe one of the D*C crew might be able to find out from the lady herself next year for us.

Reading Acorna's Quest.
In it it mentions Calum seeing Acorna in her 'grazing position'
That makes it sound like they bend to graze to me
He caught sight of Acorna in her grazing posture and was delighted that she, at least, had had some luck

But since she was still a child and didn't exactly have anyone to teach her Linyaari etiquette... Children do just fine on hands and knees!

Is she a child in Quest? Struck me as being more late teens at the least.
And why would she eat like that rather than follow the example set to her by her carers?
I know sure as hell dammnit my kids have NEVER eaten on hands and knees, and that is because they don't see anyone else do so.
Surely they would have endevoured to teach her manners and therefore any strange 'eating posture' would be instinctive rather than taught...
*EDIT*
She was grazing off trees in the passage I posted, so I wasn't thinking so much hands and knees as a more relaxed posture.
And at the end of the book it is mentioned that she is old enough for a lifemate. I doubt children would get a lifemate to deal with the urges she had had and blushed about!

"I'll try to be more careful" Acorna promised quietly, watching both white and multicoloured Linyaari sitting cross legged in the field or simply lying down, rolling over to get a new nibble when they'd worn out the old spot
Again, grazing positions....
Yet to find a reference to how ther graze and walk though.

Sorry, I was thinking it was from the first book - in Hafiz's garden.

 I quite like the tender bits from the bottom of the stem of grass
Dunno why, it's just nice to chew and doesn't taste so bad you can't eat it.

I'm not sure but I know when Acorna eats at her wecloming party I had the image of plants hanging so been at mouth height, don't know if anyone else had the same image, but I assumed that they picked it maybe sitting down to eat.

AW online:
"All six Linyaari were squatted in grazing posture, in a circle, staring
at each other through eyes shining with the reflection of the
simulated moon...."

So, what is a grazing posture then, Reelie?

She got a lot of stuff from trees - so she could graze standing up at least part of the time.
AQ online:
"Trees, over there, Acorna," Calum said, pointing beyond
and behind the ship toward a distant hillock. "Look! You go see
if there's anything edible there.
