I remember that there was a popular thread on the OKT like this. I have a list somewhere of who I think they all should look like, just to have a good mental image of them when I'm reading the books, but I seem to have misplaced it. So who do you think the characters should look like?

McClance
13th January 2005, 01:23 AM
I tend to use the voices of a lot of familiar actors/actresses when I'm reading too.

My of my casting:

Landing:
Michael O'Hare as Admiral Benden
Claudia Christian as Governor Boll
Robert Picardo as Liliancamp
Bruce Boxleitner as Tillek
Peter Duryea as Sean Connell

2nd Pass:
Dennis Quaid as K'vin
Dina Meyer as Zulaya
Patrick Stewart as M'shall
Gates McFadden as Irene
Vaughn Armstrong as Paulin
Clive Revill as Chalken

9th Pass:
Viggo Mortenson as F'lar
Guy Pearce as F'nor
Ian McKellan as Robinton
Laurel Goodwin as Menolly
Suzie Plakson as Kylara
John Noble as Meron

That's all I can recall for now.

Do you hear Viggo MortensEn using his Aragorn voice or his own rather rusty saw voice? Interesting for a man who learned English in NY, he sounds Southern to my ears.

Perhaps he should play Toric, then. He's Southern... :redfruit: :runaway:

Ok, back to topic. I think Viggo has a kind of nasal "twang" to his voice. I'm not sure if that's Southern, but he'd make an interesting Pernese character.

I guess the only question is which one? McClance says F'lar. Anyone else have an opinion?

Finally found my list. The problem with alot of my choices are that they are personal friends or relatives of mine, so I'll leave those ones out.

AIVUS - voice of Robin Williams
Alessan - Orlando Bloom
Avril Bitra - Sigourney Weaver
Paul Benden - Captain from ‘Titan A.E.' (sorry, thats an animated character, but he just looks right to me)
Breide - Alan Rickman
Brekke - Charisma Carpenter
Camo - Jim Carey
Chalkin - Thor from ‘The Ultimates' comic book (another drawn character, but I was just going for a mental image)
Corman - Gary Oldman
Domick - Brad Garret
Dushik - Ethan Suplee
F'lar - Jim Caveesel
F'nor - Guy Pearce
Fandarel - John Rys Davies
Fax - David Thewlis
Groghe - Brian Cox

Jayge - either Paul Walker or Chris O'Donnell
Jaxom -Jake Gillienhall

Norist - James Woods
Oldive - Danny Devito
Piemur - Ben Savage

Sorka Hanrahan - Laura Prepon
T'gellan - David Wenham
T'lion - Travis Fimmel
Sallah Telgar - Famke Janssen

I'd say Kate Beckinsale for Avril Bitra.
Robinton is the hardest to cast, perhaps Placido Domingo, he does have a wonderful singing voice.
I've always pictured Robert Redford as Paul Benden.
There's always (irish)Man of the Moment - Colin Farrell, as Sean Connell, with Charlize Theron as Sorka.
Michelle Pfeiffer would be good for (older) Sallah Telgar, she's good at tragic.
Keanu Reeves could play T'bor, to Gwen Steffani's Kylara.
Peimur - Tobey Maguire
Menolly - the girl who sings with Evanesence, just because of her voice.
F'lar for me would have to be Eric Bana and I agree that Guy Pearce would be good for F'nor.

Hmm.... Ah! I just forgot the actress's name..... You know... If Catherine Zeta Jones dyed her hair, she would be the perfect Kylara. Her voice is so sultry. I agree with a lot of bronze-dragonrider's choices... though I'm afraid Jim Carrey would try to make Camo too humorous.

Bronze-Dragonrider
14th January 2005, 04:50 AM
Good idea for Catherine Zeta Jones. She'd fit nicely. And I didn't picture Jim Carey's usual outlandish preformances for Camo, I just thought that strictly appreance-wise, he might look right. I could imagine Carey stumbling around shouting and singing along with fire lizards, out of tune :D

I'm not sure myself....but I agree mostly with Bronze Dragonrider..especially in Leri being played by Anne Mccaffrey...wouldn't it be nice for her to play one of her characters?

I thought of someone else for Robinton....but I will have to think of his name....darn short term memory...

Wow--Impressive lists everyone! I'm awful remembering the names of people I interact with, much less the names of actors, so I need a reference guide to figure out who all but the most famous actors listed are.

As far as Jim Carey as Camo, I have to agree with NeouofPern. Beyond potentially making Camo too humorous (and in the process belittling his character), I always pictured Camo as a fairly large man--not necessarily overweight, just stout. I'm not sure if there's anything to back that up--just my minds-eye view.

Also, I have a hard time picturing Tobey Maguire as Piemur. That's probably because I still have a hard time seeing him as the spider-man of the comic books (biting/sarcastic humor). He plays an excellent Peter Parker but seems too serious to play spider-man or Piemur. Just my :2cent:

McClance
14th January 2005, 11:44 PM
I also agree that Jim Carey would be terrible in ANY Pern role. He tends to be the same character in every role he plays.

Like cheetah, I have also pictured Camo as a large guy--somewhat like Lenny from Of Mice and Men.

Bronze-Dragonrider
14th January 2005, 11:57 PM
Oh well. I usually update lists as I hear better suggestions than my own ideas. My lists are usually just to have a good idea of what they look/sound like in my mind while I'm reading the books and I can make them 'act' whatever way I like. So Carey's humorous and exaggerated preformances are in no way part of that

Keep the ideas coming! I love what I've heard so far :bouncy:

I remembered who I meant! Renee Zelwiger (sp?) as Kylara... But with Catherine Zeta Jones's voice. Boo yah. For Camo.... That guy who played Charley, in that old movie. Well, if he looked the same now as he did then.

I was thinking more of his character in Seabiscuit. I'm doing my best to ignore Spiderman, having grown up with the best of Marvel comics in the late 70's and 80's. I liked the action and CGI in the second film, but what was all that psycho-babble for?

Does anyone think Russell Crowe would make a good T'ron?
Heath Ledger for N'ton
Susan Sarandon for Silvina
Brian Cox as Fax (he was brilliant as Agamemnon in Troy)

The problem I have with casting is that I can see the face of the actor, but never remember the name.

Yea, I have the whole book, but only scanned those two in. Others that I've picked up online are Robinton, Sebell (who happens to look like another of my friends, who also happens to be a musician) ;), F'lar, Lessa, Jaxom (I rather dislike that one), Sharra, and that pic of the Benden Red.

Mathew Brodderick for Jaxom, and I think Julia Roberts for Moretta. That would be a good start I think.

Lady Arwyn

Lessa - Eliza Dushku or Jessia Alba (dark, petite with an attitude!)
F'lar - Adrian Paul
F'nor - Dale Midkiff (from "TimeTrax")
Fandarel - Michael Clarke Duncan
Jaxom - Ben Afflek (somehow he always seemed to me to fit the descriptions of Jaxom)
Kylara - Hudson Leick (Callisto on Xena)
Lytol - Michael Ironside (he's got the bitter, depressed but good heart down pat)
F'lon - Mark Singer
R'gul - Dirk Benedict
Toric - Kevin Sorbo
Master Shonagar - John Rhys Davies
Thella - Angelina Jolie

Hmmm, I guess it's down to a metter of taste, but I've never seen Gwen Stefani as overly beautiful. This is an interesting comment by Anne on Robinton casting:

http://www.crescentblues.com/2_1issue/mccaffrey.shtml

"Crescent Blues: Speaking of the Masterharper, rumors have been circulating that a movie based on his book might be on the horizon. Any truth to these rumors and if so, who do you have in mind for the title role?

Anne McCaffrey: I've thought of a lot of people who might be good in the role of Masterharper Robinton. But generally they are of such a calibre that they price themselves out of our budget. James Cromwell was, to my mind, a possible but his acting career just took off on warp drive. Robinton must be tall, fit, and have a good speaking voice (singers can always dub in).

I often thought Dwight Schultz (formerly Lt. Brocolli) would do justice to the part. Many email fans have suggested Sean Connery but that would really take all the budget! [Grins.] What I'd like to do is find a relatively unknown actor who has the look and the right charisma, as Babylon 5 did with the actors who played G'kar and Londo Molinari, and let them develop the character. But it's not my call. "

Merelan - Jennifer Garner
Sebell - M. Night Shamalan
Toric - Keanu Reeves

Wow... is all I can say..LOL! While I don't have any suggestions for people I am horrified by these ones, Bronze-Dragonrider!

Teehee.. I don't mean to sound mean but Katie Holms is a HORRIFYING choice for Menolly. Jennifer Garner is too young to be Merelan... M. Night Shamalan as Sebell? Can he even act?? And have you ever seen Keanu Reeves in a bad-guy role (Much Ado About Nothing.. -shudder-) it just doesn't work.

LOL.. sorry for that.. your other suggestions were good. :-P

Yeah, I've since revised my views :erm: I was a silly noob back then

I don't know what the hell I was thinking with Katie Holms
I'm still sticking with Jennifer Garner as Merelan (but just made to look older, not at the age she is now)
M. Night Shaymalan, err... another bad choice I made, now I'm thinking more like along the lines of Michael Shanks or Orlando Bloom.
I know Keanu Reeves stinks at acting a bad guy, but in my imagination I can make him act however I want him to ;) I just think that visually, Keanu fits as Toric, my imagination fills in the rest.

I think James Franco would be good as Jaxom. James Woods would be a good Petiron. Sophia Myles would be a good Moreta, if she looked a bit older. Stanley Anderson could play MasterHarper Gennell.

I could definitely see Scarlet Johansson as Kylara. If Al Pacino lost the accent, he could be Oldive. Bruce Willis would be good as S'loner or Maidir. I could also see Penelope Cruz as Lessa if she didn't have the accent.

Hmmm...I can't see Scarlette as Kylara... she might be able to pull off 'high-school b*tch', but not 'unhinged malevolent b*tch' like Kylara. I just can't picture anyone else than Hudson Leick now :D http://webhome.idirect.com/~nuzhathl/callme.jpg

I might be able to see a younger Heather Locklear as Kylara....

Jonathan Frappier looks like a young Fax. Maybe Kevin Costner as F'lar?
