The Ill-Fated Hatching

A Hatching is a happy affair
A bond the weyrpairs now share
Sometimes, things go wrong
That's why I now sing this song

Once at the Benden Weyr
It was a cold night, I hear
The old gold had just died
With every rider teary-eyed
With Jora's Nemorth as senior queen
Bronze Chendith continued the gene
A paltry clutch then was laid
Too few bronzes, I am afraid

All too soon, the dragonets chose
But in a Weyr, that's how it goes
Jora was happy as can be
With S'loner not showing much glee
Lord Maidir of Benden Hold
Congratulated Jora and her gold
His Lady Hayara sat nearby
But her husband's mind went awry

For several Turns, Maidir had hated
The Weyrleader of the Weyr, so overrated
Now, he and S'loner talked
At the conversation, he did not balk
Sitting far away from his lady wife
Maidir confessed his strife
"I am tired," he said, "bone weary"
"My senses are turning quite dreary.
I'd like to go home to Benden Hold
If you don't mind, I feel too cold."

S'loner obliged and out they walked
To bronze Chendith, as they talked
No one noticed that they had left
The leaders had showed much deft
Eyes whirling, Chendith let them board
He knelt to accomodate the Benden lord

The watchdragon, blue Danith
Noted their departure - he'd admit
He kept his watch, and a few minutes later
The tension in the Weyr was greater

A keening ran through the Weyr
A tragedy had occurred here
The dragons said Chendith was dead
Hayara then screamed with dread
For not only had a Leader been lost
But she lost her husband at a heavy cost
