Okay. My Weyr has proposed spicing up the site by adding a feature where posting a post or doing a certain thing will get you "currency." (Don't panic. Not real money, so it doesn't violate A.M.'s non-profit thing.) My members are currently voting yes or no on this matter... We'll see if it passes.

The only problem I find is figuring out all the exchange rates.

I looked at page 118-119 in the DLGP.

"The denominations are
1/32 ofa mark
1/16 of a mark
1/8 of a mark
1/4 of a mark
1/2 of a mark
1 mark
2 arks
5 marks
10 marks
100 marks (few)

Only so many marks are issued per Turn, to balancethe supply of goods or to replace, old worn-out mark pieces.

Etc etc.

Then, you have the chart on 118 about what a mark will buy.

So, the actual question:
Does anyone else have any helpful information to add? Can the fractional marks be accurately called something else (just an example would be coppers, silver, etc.. though tat is not pernese since marks are wooden)? Other than in the DLGP, do you have any further info on how much of this or that will buy this or that?

Apart from their abbreviations (an eight, a sixteen(th)) I haven't come across other names for the marks.

I do have to add that it seems Pern has different kinds of marks, more or less the way we in Europe (on old Terra) have different Euro's :)
There are Harper Hall marks, Holds seem to have their marks, crafts have their own marks and the marks that are valued most seem to be Smithcraft marks. It also seems marks from a certain hall or hold are best valued at the hall or hold they were issued at. How this system works? I haven't got a clue, sorry.

Although no evidence I have always assumed that Pern is in teh pre-paper money time while having marks. That is to say that there exist the kind of IOU that, on old Terra again, led to real paper money.

Oh, and the mods on this site are called Hosts, Duchess :)

Thank you, Hans.

P.S. Mods rhymed better with God. "Hello, God. It's me again."

Oh, no, don't encourage them! They're insufferable enough already! :)

I've seen some fandom sites use terms such as woodchips, shavings, splinters, slivers... to refer to the smaller denominations, but as Hans said, the books only call 'em by their value. I've also never quite figured out why each craft has its own marks, but as far as I can tell, they're all equal in value, that is, one Smithhall mark equals one Harperhall mark. I suppose they could revalue one hall's marks if needed, though I can't really think of why they might need to do that.

Let's see... In DSinger, Pergamol paid Piemur three and a half for a tambourine, and three for a pipe. Journeyman Palim sold six bubbly-pies per thirty-second mark. In DE/RSR, Iantine takes a commission to paint four miniatures for sixteen marks, or four marks per miniature. A bit later on, Master Jol bought a sketch from Iantine for a mark and a half. In MHoP, Journeyman Robinton offers holder Targus one smithcraft mark for one night's lodging. In Runner of Pern, Tanner Ligand offers a largish piece of well-cured hide for nine marks, though Tenna is only prepared to spend four. In SoP, F'lessan pays Gegar three marks for a skin of Benden white wine. Jayge sold a meteorite for fifteen smith marks, and the one that landed in the Crom mines was sold for twenty. Masterprinter Tagertarl sold a book of ballads for three weaverhall marks. I'm sure there're more, but that should give a fair idea, I'd think.

Here are a few from the Dragon Lover's Guide. I won't put down what hall you buy from though, too much typing and most of it you can figure out yourself. :D

One mark will buy: a plain leather belt, a sack of fine milled pastry flour, 16 (1 pound) loaves of bread, 1/2 half sack of sweetening, 192 bubbly pies, 2 sacks of unshelled nuts, a plain shirt, a child's frock, a small knife, 1 young ovine (sheep?) or 4 fowl, a keg of ale, 2 bottles of plain wine (no Benden in there :D ), a pair of moccasins, a hand-sized hard-wood box with hinges, hasps, an apprentise made pipe, a sacks of Cromcoal, a wetstone, a graduated bead necklace of agate or quartz, a bangle bracelet of jade or 1/8 of a bovine herdbeast. It also says that runner beasts cost from 9 marks up and riding gear can be had for 3 marks used, or up to 12 marks for custom gear for a Lord Holder.

the value of marks is set yearly by a committee of traders, Craftmasters and Lord Holders.

I hope this helps.
