View Full Version : UK Gather - who's going

Ian
31st December 2005, 03:04 PM
Now we have both place & dates (York, 8th-10th September), it's time for peeps to stand up & be counted! I need as many names as possible as soon as possible, so I can give the hotel a good idea of how many are coming (large numbers could mean group discount). So if you know you can come, say so here, if you're pretty sure you can come, say so here, even if you hope you can come, say so here. But please, if you know for certain you can't come, don't say so here; it'll be a lot easier to add up the total if I know that the only ones who have posted will be those who will be or may be coming. :)

Obviously the 4 of us will be there (2 days after getting back from D*C!), and quite probably WG too, so that's 5 to start with!

The list:
Ian
LL
BM
H
WG
c_ris
Oldrider
Apo
Gromit
MusicFiend
Jax
Songbreeze
kc
Simon HoneyBear
Kerianth
j_merc
Jayson (or possibly Alter )
Another mystery person (& even I don't know who this one is)
Amy B
Dancer
Just Bob
Korin
Korin's mum
Korin's sis
Pinkellie
Bertrand
Malvace

Final confirmation isn't urgent, what I'm after now is an idea of how many people are likely to be there. There'll always be one or two who say they can come & then find they can't at the last minute, just as there'll be some who find that they can come near the time.

Weeeellllllll I could be alluding to the fact that last time we 'gathered' in York some of us drank a little to much...... But then again I might just be trying to make the event sound interesting (which it is by the way folks) so more people come and make it even more of a sucess!

Unis don't usually start until late September/early October, so you shouldn't have started that early in September.

8-10th SEPTEMBER is your Freshers Week? Damn, you start early! Ours is about that time in OCTOBER!
I think Freshers' Week registration tends to be 11th-16th September, sprawling into the weekends at either end. Lectures then start on the 19th. Admittedly, I could be mistaken, but I am absolutely sure we have been well into lectures by the end of the first week in October, when my birthday is.
If I'm right, 8th-10th is the big move weekend when a large proportion of the students travel from home to uni. Could be awkward.

It doesn't look like I'm going to make it to the gather this year (alas), but I saw the mention of t-shirts and thought I'd put in that I'm currently working in a place that does t-shirt printing. Something along the lines of the 2003 t-shirt would probably cost about £15 (including the shirt), but bulk orders get discounts. T-shirts of all colours, shapes, and sizes are available.

Don't know if anyone would be interested in this, but I thought I'd mention it.

Ian
10th February 2006, 12:41 AM
If I remember rightly the shirts I did for the 2003 gather cost me about £2-3 each from Asda, & I sold them for about £5, to cover the cost of ink & transfer sheets too...

Isn't that the case for everyone. All Ian needs now is a list of people who intend going - so he has an idea of numbers for hotel quotes. You don't have to commit until absolutely necessary.

All Ian needs now is a list of people who intend going - so he has an idea of numbers for hotel quotes.

In that case, put my name down.

Unless something really bad happens (like the Channel Tunnel collapsing), I should be able to make it.

As long as you avoid the designated race route (assuming they run the same system as for Ascot & Ebor), then there shouldn't be any real problem. Most peeps tend to arrive for gathers on Friday afternoon & evening, & by then everyone will already be at the racecourse, or if it's evening & they're on their way home, then they'll be going out of York, not coming in. Btw, the "race" route from the outer ring road is up past Copmanthorpe & along Bishopthorpe Road, if I remember rightly, so the best way in from the south would be to go along the ring road to the A59 junction & in along Poppleton Road/Holgate Road.

One hotel that might be a solution is the Premier Travel Inn on Blossom Street (about 50 yards outside the walls & 2 minutes' walk from the station). Their rooms are about £67 per night (per room, not per person), but don't include breakfast, & I think they have a meeting room we could probably use on the Saturday night. We'll check that one out, & another one that looks promising too, if not already booked up by racegoers.

I knew I nominated Scarborough for a reason ;)

JayEgo
30th March 2006, 11:53 AM
:erm: I certainly won't be able to afford £67 / night! :faint: if that's the only option, I'm sure it'll rule a lot of other folk out too! I was thinking perhaps £100 all in for the weekend, to include two nights accomodation and breakfast with pennies for lunch & dinner too?

Good job I'm starting to know York a little bit now.

Ian
30th March 2006, 07:23 PM
Yes, that's the one, but LL got some info from another one today which is smaller (so we wouldn't have as many non-KT peeps to scare ;) ). That one quoted £70 per room B&B (so would be cheaper in real terms than the Travel Inn), but didn't mention singles. We'll have to quiz them about that. This one's on Marygate, just outside the walls & opposite the Museum Gardens, with the river just a couple of minutes' walk away & the station only about 5.

Their website is here (http://www.jorvikhotel.co.uk), and they even show the current menu (though considering the prices they show on the site are up to April 2004 I'm not sure how current the menu is!). This is one we considered last time, but ruled out because they couldn't take the numbers we had that year, but they told LL today that they can handle 28.

Oh, and they want £15 deposit per person (not per room). We'll see what other info we can get out of them tomorrow, but to be honest it looks like a good bet, & finding somewhere that can take our numbers & won't charge the Earth (bearing in mind that a lot of places hike their prices for race meetings), is going to get harder by the day.

Hmm, just realised that the guy who designed the website is one of my regular customers at w**k!

JayEgo
31st March 2006, 07:51 AM

Hmm, we have a slight problem here. LL rang the hotel today to confirm the single room price, which is £45 as I thought. However, there is apparently only one single room available  There are 23 twin/double ones though.

Ian

I'm going to have to have a poke around over the weekend & see if there's anywhere else with more singles & without more price! Looking at the list of who's going, the majority seem to be singles, & there's no way we could find anywhere with that many single rooms without going to one of the big (& expensive) hotels, which are almost certainly booked up for that weekend now anyway (since most of them are in the vicinity of the racecourse).

However, there's a smaller hotel about 100 yards along from the Jorvik & similarly priced, which may be worth getting in touch with for those who aren't willing to share. Their website is here (http://www.coachhousehotel-york.com). They only have 11 rooms, so wouldn't be big enough for all of us, but their single prices are actually slightly lower than the Jorvik.

No joy finding anywhere else, I'm afraid :(

And on the subject of sharing, I'm going to start a sharing thread, so those who are willing to share can sort out roomies :)

When LL rang the Jorvik yesterday they told her that rooms were filling up fast, as of yesterday they only had 4 twins & 2 doubles available, & doing a quick search around the net earlier today it seems almost every hotel in York is already fully booked that weekend. See my new thread for possible solutions!

Now we've got a firm location, rooms being filled and all, should we start planning what we're gonna do?

I'm thinking basking in the tropical waters of Scarborough in September mightn't work :erm:

Do we need (another) new thread for gather events?

We'll have one, let's just get all the rooms sorted out first :)

Ah yes, the warm, clear expanse of the North Sea is reknowned for its clemency, especially during the sun-kissed month of September. :rofl2:

Ahem. *points at Ian's custom title thingy* Not in charge, eh?

Ian

That refers to the site, not the gather :p

Anyway, you can still be organised even if you're not in charge ;)

I still need to hear from Korin, his mum & sis, Simon, & Dancer, & since we have 8 peeps left, & only 4 rooms to put them in, sharing is definitely the order of the day (though there's still a bed left in the girlie room, which would mean one person could have a twin room to themselves).

I'll chase up the other members of my family group this weekend, Ian and try to get the confirmations you need...

Sis seems to be NOT getting any updates from the Yahoo group but I don't know why...

I stopped using my yahoo mail account when I switched to gmail... Have I missed much? :sorry:

Ian

Not really, everything that goes in there goes in here too, the Yahoo group is really for people who don't come in here often (if at all).

Korin, I've fixed your sis' problem, she was set just to get special notices, rather than individual emails, so now she should get everything. I'll send a message out now, which she should get :)

Korin

Glad it was something fixable, Ian... I just hope any problems at our end are fixable too... I missed WAY too many gathers since my inaugeral (sp) one in 2003

I have it on good authority that Bert wants to squidge into the girlie room

I've allocated everyone a room now, just so I have a full list to give the hotel when we go up there tomorrow. That's not to say we can't move peeps around later if we need to :)
