I started reading Elizabeth Moon's books after I read Sassinak and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Until recently, I had only read the Serrano Legacy series, but have recently read and enjoyed the Paksenarrion/Gird series and the new Vatta series.
The Serrano Legacy series would still have to be my favourite, and I'm highly disappointed that there will be no more books in the series (straight from the authors mouth).

I fell in love with Elizabeth's work when I read The Deeds of Paksenarrion and these are still my favorite series with Sassinak a very close second. I've read a few of the Serrano Legacy but decided to wait until I can get the lot of them and have a massive read fest. :D

Nooooooooooo!

no more serrano books ???? nooo *sob*

does that include the suiza spin off series ? as those later books do seem to be almost independant spin off books at times, !! i so wanted to be able to find out what happens to young suiza and her rather sudden marriage ?

I just finished "Trading in Danger" (I tried reading "Winning Colors" once but got bored with it) and I rather liked it. I don't think the second book in the Vatta series is out in paperback yet, and I'm not willing to pay for hardbacks right now, but when it comes out in pb I will definitely be buying it.

The pb of the 2nd Vatta's war came out here a few weeks ago (later than it should have arrived).

The Serrano legacy books are still my favourite and I'm sorry they're at an end.

Don't forget that us Brits are dead luck when it comes to Elizabeth Moon, we seem to get the paperbacks at about the same time as (if not before) the US gets their hardbacks. According to Amazon.com, Trading In Danger only came out in PB at the end of August.
I suppose it makes up for all the other American authors that we have to either import or wait ages for :)

I would also love to see more Suiza books! Or at least one, about the wedding and afterward...I started with Sassinak too I think, then the Serrano Legacy books before getting up the nerve to try Paksennarion/Gird...not a big fantasy fan, especially when it's all about magic and elves. But Moon surprised me, and I ended up loking the books. :)

Have yet to read Trading in Danger - it lost to a Voyager book today, so I'll get to it when I've finished that. Maybe...

I tried reading "Winning Colors" once but got bored with it.
I can see how it might be boring without having read the first two that acquaint you with the characters... I recommend you try "Hunting Party" - or skip to "Once a Hero" which has a very different feel from the three Heris Serrano books. Don't give up so easily! Getting down now :box:

I second this! I did even want to read Winning Colors when I first saw it in the store. But I got Once a Hero later, and loved it, then went back and found Hunting Party. After which I gave Winning Colors another try cause I wanted to see what happened next, and ended up liking it after all.

I really like her books. I read the Herris Serrano books, and the Suiza spin offs and liked them a lot. I have also read Trading in danger and am now waiting for the second book (I haven't ordered it yet, because I don't have any time to read at the moment). I also read and liked the Paksenarion books, even though I have not yet read the first book. The book I liked best however was the one about autistic people in the future (I can't remember the title and the books is not on my downstair shelves). That book had a bit more dept then her other books. It really showed that people with a handicap, or just people who are different can have a very special and important place in society. They shouldn't be ignored, they should be valued for what they can do. This book left a huge impression on me. Her other books are nice reading material, but not as special as that one.

I think Speed of Dark was written because she has an autistic child herself.

And as far as the Brits being out of luck with Elizabeth Moon, you do have first crack at the Steven Erikson books. We have to order them from Amazon/UK and pay for shipping. :2cent:

Yes -H- that is the title (my mind is like a sieve these days). I would recommnd it to anyone, so if you see it again somewhere, buy it. I don't think you will be dissappointed eventhough it is different from her other books

I thought that cake was a weak point - they could so easily have been dumped. And a heroine named Kylara made me laugh

I love all of her books!
So much so that I have every thing she's written, apart from book 1 of the 'Vatta's war' as I picked up book 2 by mistake so have had to order book 1 as they'd sold out when I went back for it!!!! :banghead:
It's maddening not to be able to read book 2 until it gets in!!!
I started, as so many have seemed to, by reading the co-authored books with Anne, and so found yet another author who plays with my imagination!
Now I've every thing by Ms Moon.
I'm now starting on the other authors who have also co-authored and have posted on the other boards asking for recommendations for starter books: Either a stand alone novel or the first in a series, so I can judge if these are authors who's work I want to read and by association collect! :applause:
So I'm open to all sugestions as where to start!

I found the first one rather compelling - perhaps you're just not into military stuff? But do keep reading, the second one is much better and will keep you going into the third to complete the story.

That. :D

It was rather annoying for just the descriptions of military life - also, the name "Dorthansdotter" sounded too Earthy for me to really get into it as a fantasy novel.

Dorthansdotter. Dorthan's daughter.

Funny, the attention to detail in describing the life of a mercenary is one of the things I enjoy the most!

I haven't read anything else yet, but I love Speed of Dark. I wonder what those who have high-functioning autistic kids think of it...

My younger son is more mid-functioning, but I put a bit in the "What Have You Read Recently?" thread, I think in response to you and Meredith. :)
It made me think, really think. What do I want for Chance? I want him to have as "easy" of a life as possible. I want him to be happy and do work and take care of himself. I want his troubles and problems to be "normal" ones. When it comes right down to it, Lou had most of those things but an ability to understand the "Why" of what other people do. If this "cure" was offered in five or even ten years, I think I would allow them to do it. Later on, Chance would have to decide for himself, but I don't know if I woud want him to. Maybe I would - it was SO sad that Lou changed and SO wonderful that he changed, too. It is an amazing and frightening thing to think about.

What did you think about it?

I thought it was great, but as I don't know any autistics personally it was a bit difficult to relate to the problem. The ethical questions the book raised were very interesting. How much difference will society tolerate when there's a way of decreasing that difference? What is a disability and what is merely a personality quirk? How much leeway should special needs people get in order to function in the workplace? Etc.

I know - it was one of the most thought-provoking books I have read in awhile. I know that many, many people in the autistic community have issues with the idea of a "cure". There are so many more high-functioning people now, and I understand that they feel as though they are okay the way they are. What ARE we going to do when most things can be "fixed"? How much do we do? To me, Lou's coworkers' "modifications" were not a big deal, but where will businesses draw the line in what they'll do? It does give you a lot to consider.

It really made me think - and it definitely is reminiscent of "Flowers for Algernon" which I read in 8th grade.
