I absolutely adore the Vorkosigan series. It annoys me, (can't work out why), but I still love it.
Strangely enough, my favourite of the series would have to be Falling Free, despite the fact that it has none of my favourite characters in it.

Miles Vorkosigan is one of the most unusual heroes in fiction. The books are wonderfully enjoyable, the plots sound and the continuitity can't be faulted.
I have a soft spot for his hapless cousin Ivan, he's just so clueless sometimes.

The same here for Ivan. He just doesn't see what is happening around him most of the time.

I'm not at all familiar with this author - what would you suggest I start with? What is it about?

I enjoy the Vorkosigan series, regularly re-reading certain novels in the series, but have trouble with Bujold's fantasy novels.
Still have not been able to finish The Curse Of Chalion.
On another board, someone mentioned that they had the opposite situation they loved the fantasy but didn't like the sci-fi series.

I think you'd have to start with Cordelia's Honor as well. It introduces the universe and several of the main characters. A couple of whom, you really need to know the history of.

Yes, but... it's really not as well written as some of her more recent novels.
Another oft-mentioned starting point is the novella-collection "Borders of Infinity". Follow that up with "Brothers in Arms". "Memory" is another good place to start.
As for me - I began with "A Civil Campaign". Yes, I didn't have much of a clue about who was what to start with, and couldn't abide Miles for the first few chapters, but by the time I got to the Dinner Party scene, I was hooked.

For continuity, start with Cordelia's Honor. It introduces the main characters of the Vorkosigans.

It was certainly a lot easier to read than Warrior's Apprentice, as it took me a couple of times before I could get through it.
Memory is one of my favourites, along with A Civil Campaign. The dinner party scene is certainly fun to read, once you read it you just have to read the rest of the novel for the outcome.

CH (the compilation of "Shards of Honor" and "Barrayar") is easy to read, yes... but perhaps too easy. I would have been put off by the writing quality if it had been the first of hers I'd read.
That said, if I'm being fussy about its literary merits, it's still more than equal to anything Anne's written in the last decade. Pern fans who still enjoy Anne's writing style shouldn't have any problem with it.

I have just recently found her books, due to a story on the Baen free library (mountains in mourning) I went to her website The bujold nexus and had a look at the chronology. Which said to read Fallng Free first, followed by Cordelia's Honor (Shards of Honor and Barrayar) following that Warriors apprentice. I think I agree with this order, though you keep wondering about the quaddies until one of the last books in the series if you read it in that order.
I enjoyed reading the books, though they were sometimes a bit to easy. Miles always figures out the problem. I would like to see a book about Ivan, he is a nice character and not as dense as the first books make him appear.

One of the quaddies also appeared in an early Miles story.
Agree about Ivan, he should have his own book. Want him to find a nice girl.
