View Full Version : How creepy this would be...

Can you imagine how horrid it'd be to gone into... *thunder and lightning* between! *scary howing noises*
I mean that'd scare the crap out of me! I get scared easily any way and I HATE the dark so I think I'd probably freak out and fall of my dragon. (Even if we're only in there for a little while!)
Just thinking about it... ung! :faint:

Tree's scratching on a window at night scare you. The rider your holding on to would be squeezed in half by the time you made it to your destanation.

The only thing that freaks me out about between is the cold. Even though I live in the ice cube of Canada, I still haven't gotten used to cold and I hate it. But its only a few seconds and its over, so its not that bad. I don't think its possible to fall of your dragon because of your riding straps holding you in place, unless they were sabotaged like in the White Dragon.

I think I could stand it for a few seconds - with my eyes closed. Dark doesn't bother me a bit, but I definitely don't like cold. I'd rather keep moving and be well bundled against it if I have to deal with it.

Dark doesn't bother me.. Cold I can stand. But to be droped into Between... that would be horible...

It would be the sensory deprivation that would get me. You see nothing, you hear nothing, you feel nothing except cold...
There's nothing in between, and I assume that includes air. Not being able to breathe, on top of everything else, would scare me to death!

I'm fine with thunder and lightening.. though I still wouldn't want to be flying in it. And I'm okay with the dark... so I think I'd be fine *between* for as little time as I would be in it.

Hmmm let's ponder this for just a moment. To be able to ride a dragon and be bonded to said same in exchange for a paltry time between without air and total sensory deprivation with just my mind to play tricks on me? Where do I sign up. I would gladly face between to ride a dragon. :2cent:

Um, that was one of the major issues in AtWoP, the space suits not only protected the riders from the airless "atmosphere" of the Red Star, but also from the airless Between. And a lack of air is probably why Lessa blacked out after her long ride Between times.
*sigh* Yet another inconsistency in "Beyond Between". Moreta and the others should have died of asphyxiation after getting stuck Between.

But she *did* die, in a kinda-sorta-not-really way. I find that story very hard to explain, it seems that its only the ones trapped between because of insuficient coordinate visuals, that kind of live. But it seems that the ones who suicide in between actually do die. I'll let the ones who haven' read it find out for themselves. I'm still kind of confused by it, and really creeped out by it. That one really spooked me.

I agree. I would face between to ride a dragon but only if it were for a few seconds. If it were a few hours I think any one would die. (Has any one been in between for a few hours?)

Is there no air Between ? It says that it takes the time it takes to take three breaths to get anywhere in a couple of the books.
I sneeze when I get cold. I'd be the one that sneezed, snapped her riding straps and fell off!

Between has nothing, air, sunshine, moon, stars, absolutly nothing. That is why the riders and dragons must have a destination firmly in their mind before going between cause there is nothing to guide you once you are in there.

18th January 2005, 11:13 PM
There isn't anything between. The riders are told you can't see, hear or even feel your dragon between your legs. I've yet to get my hands on Todd's book to see what his theory is.

I think it'd be quite nice, actually, to get away from the constant barrage of sights, smells, sounds ... for a few seconds anyhow.
Don't know who wrote that bit in DragonsKin, but Kindan was able to feel the dragon beneath him when he went between. Just another inconsistency.

I'd hate it the first time. "THEY WON'T MAKE ME GOOOO!" And then, afterwards, I'd say 'let's do that one more time for the helluv it!'
I think the not breathing and no senses part would get me. I live in a cold, cold state, so I'm used to the cold. :runaway:

I think it would be like getting on a huge roller coaster, you know? You're screaming, "OGOD OGOD OGOD OGOD" and you're scared senseless, but then once you get off, it's like, "DUDE! THAT WAS COOL!" And Lessa was in for longer than three seconds, too. But she was going way back. See DragonsDawn....About the last twenty pages or so. Later!

So call me outsane too...lol :D
I actually volunteed for a sensory deprivation study in college. I thought it was a blast. But I was the only one in the group who enjoyed it.
First they put me in a specially designed wetsuit...temp control apparatus and body function monitors. Then they ran a breathing tube down my throught and enclosed my head in a plastic bubble. Then they put us in a horizontal tube full of water and turned off the lights. The water temp was at body heat level, the suit was heated to match, the pressure in the bubble was equalized and they had some way of keeping you directly in the center of the tube.
The only thing you could actually feel was the panic button in your right hand.
It was weird at first, but after a while I really relaxed into it. I never pushed the button...they had a maximum time limit set for 3 hours and that's when they pulled me out. I actually fell asleep, screwed all their data/statistics up.
The folk who ran the experiment always looked at me funny after that. :D

Maybe you're a special case, Cin. I'd heard reports from some sensory deprivation studies that said that people would start hallucinating if they were in there too long. Or perhaps they were dreaming...? ;)

If you dream you die, then you really will--Bull****!!:irked: Like Sheradon said, "Death! Been there, Done that!"--I can't count how many times it's happened to me:roll:

hmmmm....maybe I'd better stop here.... :fiend:
back on topic, though, the sensory dep wouldn't faze me, but I definitely would not like the cold--but given the limited time of experiencing it, I certainly be willing to endure it, if that's the price for riding a dragon (mine or another's)

Just how cold IS between? I've heard someone say before that it was as cold as space, but thats impossible because humans would immediately freeze to death. Space is something like -263 (I think) I've always thought of it as around -40, 50.
Ryuu
8th March 2005, 09:51 PM
It's supposed to be Abs. Zero, but because it's an airless vacuum, you could actually survive it in the short duration due to the fact that vacuums can function as an insulating (non)matterial--remember your thermos bottle;)
There had been a number of tests done to airforce pilots and astronauts to determine what is considered "safe" exposure to vacuums & presumably, Anne had knowledge of that info. And by giving the riders some measure of risk & discomfort, it would help her story by keeping the entire population from DEMANDING a dragon of their own, after all, look at how many fans here DON't want a dragon :shhh:
Bronze-Dragonrider
8th March 2005, 10:14 PM
Isn't space an airless vacuum too? Although space isn't *quite* Abs. Zero, I'd always been taught that without the proper completely insulated spacesuit, humans would instantly die on contact with space. (Which made me a bit skeptical about dragons being able to survive in space unprotected for a prolonged period without any ill effects)
Ryuu
8th March 2005, 10:37 PM
Low earth orbit actually has enough air molecules to leach heat away from an unprotected body fairly rapidly. Also, the tests done on "volunteers" didn't get to a complete vacuum. But the body can survive exposure for several seconds before surface bloodvessals break. The most common result is mild-severe bruising showing up all over the skin.
It should make a nice statement in a film if they get that done right.
for the dragons, their hides are supposed to be much tougher than ours, even if it feels more delicate.
also, I've gotten reports of errors sending the chunks to you...so far, parts 2 & 7 of the seven emails responded that errors occured in the transmitting & I've not gotten a indication that part 1 delivered yet. Let me know if I have to resend.

I thought one of the biggest problems in space was getting rid of heat. One of the first things the space shuttles does (used to do) when getting to orbit was opening the cargo bay doors, which act as radiators.
While on the Yokohama for the first time, Piemur complains that the air on the bridge is colder than between, but Aivas contradicts him.

While on the Yokohama for the first time, Piemur complains that the air on the bridge is colder than between, but Aivas contradicts him. That's because the cold air on the ship was leaching heat away faster than the Abs Zero Vacuum of between ;)
It's the same principle as water & air--From a toasty 27ºC room, you can walk out into -10ºC air for a short time with just a short-sleave shirt before you really start feeling uncomfortable. But just jump into a pool of 5ºC water & you'll REALY feel cold! You're loosing heat more than 1000 times faster in water that's actually warmer than the air.

Well, since I live where it's winter almost nine months of the year, and most of that time there's snow on the ground and the temperature averges at around minus 30 (maybe warmer in recent years), the cold of between wouldn't bother me. It would be weird to have the sensory dep, but what's 3 seconds compared to the relationship with your dragon, the very high calling of protecting your whole planet, and the ability to go anywhere you want? I'd definitely brave between to have a dragon of my own! :heartbeat

It is in a negative way, and it is NOT a love-hate thing. Anyways, HOW BY THE EGG do people fall in love with book characters, anyways? He is VERY creepy towards Torene in 2nd Weyr and it makes me realize how much of a stalker some guys are (like I didn't notice that already!!!!) It's a scary thing, really.

It's funny how the subject of between can suddenly turn into one about how creepy M'hall is!!!!
