View Full Version : Ugly actors

It sometimes seems like all the successful actors and actresses out there are also beautiful people. This is, of course, no coincidence. However, people like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Johnny Depp, etc. are also extremely good actors.
So, can anyone think of really successful actors who star in films, and yet are not particularly attractive? I offer Nicholas Cage as a starting point, but I can't see the list stretching very far...

I have to admit, I'm one of those people who'll sit and watch a movie and go EEWW at some people, or talk about some girls gross looking hair (though usually in the movies it's perfect) I can't really think of anyone else except Benicio Deltoro - whom I think I don't like more because of the way he talks than the way he looks, I can't watch him *shudders*
Don't you think it's funny though, so many not pretty guys in the movies, (especially the older ones) but if you're a female you pretty much have to be pretty or you won't get a job....

J-Lo...? Oh, hang on, she's no actress!
I know what you mean about the beauty of Hollywood, hardly representative of us common folk but there're a few people who're relatively average Joes who've made it onto the big screen... Bruce Willis ain't that sexy IMO, nor Mel Gibson, though I know some folk may disagree.
And don't get me started on Michael Douoglas...

Merel Streep isn't beautiful in the hollywood sense but she's a fabulous actress and doesn't hurt for parts.
Humphrey Bogard and Spencer Tracy weren't hunks but they both made a lot of movies that were wildly successful. Maybe it's just today that even male stars have to be good looking to get anywhere. I can't think of an unattractive female star. Some are maybe a bit plainer, but none of them would send you screaming from a room. :D

I agree about Meryl Streep. I don't think either party of the ex-couple Brad and Jen are anything to write home about. Or Matthew Perry for that matter. In fact, I found the entire cast of Friends except Matt le Blanc uncommonly ugly for Hollywood (compared to the average Joe and Jane they look good, though). Nicholas Cage and Hugh Grant leave me cold too.

I know most people consider him attractive, but I find Orlando Bloom strangely unattractive... He has a beaky nose. The guy who played Snape. Not attractive. Guy who played Wormtongue... (his step-daughter is in some of my classes, very nice girl), hmm.... Miranda Otto isn't that pretty, at least for Hollywood.

There's plenty of people who used to be attractive, and are now still at the forefront of the industry due to their acting talents (Helen Mirren, Michael Caine, Martin Sheen, Al Pacino...) but I'm thinking of people who weren't above average in their youthful prime. There ought to be people who rose to the top purely on talent, overcoming the 'handicap' of plain features. In theory, at least, acting ability has absolutely no correlation with looks...

Everyone will probably think I'm crazy, but I detested Sean Connery when he played Bond. To me, he's an actor that got MUCH better with age, now I consider him one of the sexiest males on the planet.
As for actresses, I consider Anne Heche as the ugliest bimbo around...dumb blonde, skinny/boney/ no chest to speak of...how can anyone think she is pretty, let alone sexy. *yuck*
I can't remember his name, but a good/ugly actor would be the guy who played the scientist in the 'Back to the Future' movies...Cristopher Lloyd???

Michael Praed with short hair.
Tim Curry
Alan Rickman
Danny DiVito

Kurt Douglas
Michael Douglas
The list goes on. Now, having said that, I love these men as ACTORS... but their looks are not above average.
It is unfair, but talented plain men do make out better in the world of showbiz than talented, plain females. Most of the women who would fit into the plain catagory were/are typecast and/or usually found in supporting roles. Ethel Merman wasn't beautiful, but she could act, and she could sing.
I could name females I personally think are gross, but I'd be in a minority thinking so.

I can't stand Uma Thurman or Renee Zellweger in looks or acting ability, and especially not the Olsen Twins (I know, they can't be counted as actresses  ) I really don't understand why so many women go google eyed for Johnny Depp, he looks weird to me

By the way, I know how many people feel about them, but I'm pretty sure that both the Douglases (Kirk and Michael) got where they did partly because of sex appeal.
Steve Buscemi is the ultimate in actors with absolutely no help from looks, but he's a character actor rather than a film star. I don't think I've seen a film where he could be said to have a starring role.

Erm. Mark Hamill. Not exactly a raving beauty, but the guy can act. The scenes with Yoda on Dagobah were very, very convincing. In spite of their hammy lines, I must say that the original SW actors were much, much better than any of the new crop. I suspect part of that is that for the new movies they were mostly acting in front of bluescreens.

He's not my idea of gorgeous but Johnny Depp sure is a good actor - I like that he's not scared to do unattractive parts too like in Blow and Fear & Loathing.
Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, younger Sean Connery, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Richard Gere etc. all go on my list of ugly actors (who generally can't act for toffee either) Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe especially send unpleasant shivers down my spine almost every time I see them on screen.
Ugly actors I like are Steve Buscemi, Kevin Spacey, Alan Rickman etc. They don't have great looks but they have talent and a lot of them also have this presence on screen that makes them very sexy.
I don't understand why a lot of the women are considered that attractive to be honest, most of them are too artificial and pneumatic looking these days, think Pamela Anderson or the UK's equivalent (with even less talent) Jordan! or at the other end of the scale they are positively skeletal!

Huh? Where was I? Oh, yeah, UNattractive men...I have to admit not getting the Leo DiCaprio thing. MUCH too baby-faced. Joaquin Phoenix isn't good-looking, either. Monkey I don't think that this is a fair statement?? It seems like you're saying that because Kirstie Allie isn't stick thin like every other bloody person in hollywood that she should slim down?? Not sure if some of these may not be repeats...but this is my list. Also, my criteria here is that they aren't "Hollywood Gorgeous"....they aren't necessarily ugly either!. And many of them have a wonderful presence (hence their acting)... I am also FOND of all these, so they are certainly meant no insult. :)
Males: Danny DeVito, Dom DeLuise, Bob Hoskins.... and I'm blanking today! I know there are a lot more. Note...these are mostly comedians! They don't usually play romantic leads. I never really thought Jack Nicholson or Dustin Hoffman were good looking either. But the acting is excellent!
Females: Dame Judi Dench (maybe... I'm not as good a judge of women. but she's 'not' the stereotypical Hollywood female! It's a different kind of beauty, a presence.)
And then, just because I have NO idea why people find him hot...but for some reason he's popular... what is UP with Leonardo DiCaprio? I have never found him even remotely attractive. He has that kind of sneery look and his eyes are just...I dunno. Something about him creeps me out.
Though I gotta chime in on the Patrick Stewart... the man has SUCH a delicious presence in performance live! He's got a sexy quality in his voice, and how well he keeps himself, as well as presence, though he's also not the "stereotypical" hottie... until you look at British and Welsh actors. ;) (saw him play Othello in D.C.... sooooo good!) He doesn't have to be HOT... he has plenty of other stuff going for him. :)

Can't believe noone's mentioned Tom Hanks! I will gladly watch anything he's in, but good looking he's not.
It's the sad commentary on Hollywood that a good male actor can work as long as he wants with very little drop in box office appeal, but a good female actor, even a beautiful one drops off the scale once her age starts showing (with a few wonderful exceptions, of course).
I have noticed that UK actors don't seem to have the same hang up on physical beauty as Hollywood and thus we have such a plethora of breath-taking talent coming from there. Thank goodness! Love Alan Rickman, Jason Isaacs, Alec Guiness, Judith Denche -- there's more, but my 4-year old grandsons are creating havoc as I type, so I can't think of them.
And may I second, Sean Bean - yummmmmm.
By the way, I thought Mark Hamill was a real cutie, but the car accident he was in between the 1st and 2nd Star Wars film messed up his face so much that even with the best plastic surgery it really changed his looks. Love him, though.

He's gone to doing a lot of voice work in cartoon series and animated movies over the past years. That and voice work for video game characters. He's acted in a lot of sci-fi B movies and made for TV stuff, but nothing really big in quite a while. But I like his voice work. ;) And he's doing a couple of shows a year so he's probably enjoying it. It fits his acting style. :)

I saw Slipstream at the cinema didn't recognise Hamill in it. When the credits rolled, I was like "that was Mark Hamill playing that guy".

I dislike the idea that women have to be pencil-thin to be beautiful, and that paunchy old actors can still be handsome.

Not sure what it is , but there is definitely something about Patrick Stewart. SOmething gooooooooooooooood. I think it's the accent, or his voice, something like that... Could be that (I heard) he was a classically trained Shakespearian actor.
A couple of names I've seen that I don't agree with...
Renee Zellwegger -- isn't she the one who is changing her weight for the Bridget Jones' Diary movies, and then getting thin again right after? That can't be good for her looks. I wouldn't rule her out for that.
Nicolas Cage -- Okay, I'll admit, he is a bit funny looking. But I could just lose myself in those eyes, mmmm. I love his eyes, they seem so expressive.
Elijah Wood -- Well, all I've seen him in is a couple of things where he was still a child, and then as a hobbit. I'm not really attracted to children or hobbits. But again, those eyes. Not quite the same attraction as Nicolas Cage's, but they are amazingly blue. *sigh*
As for the ones I do agree with:
Alan Rickman (aka Snape) -- it's the face, the shape of it. Particularly the nose. It's not the Snape costume, it's the actor. It just ... Well ... Having seen the movies before reading the books made it real easy to believe that Snape was a bad guy. I'd say it was a first impressions thing, but I first saw the actor in Galaxy Quest, and rather liked that character, although he was still not attractive.
Robin Williams -- ugh, yes. Way too hairy. And really, never liked the shape of his face either. He's too big. Well, I'm not sure if big is the right word. He just seems ... larger than life, maybe? Love his acting, whether serious or comedic, but he's just not that attractive.
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston -- split recently, but imagine the *chin* their poor unfortunate child would have had, if they'd had one. Ugh.
Tom Cruise -- too small. He just seems so small, in the same way that Robin Williams is big. And his nose is all bumpy.
Russel Crowe -- I'd just like to point out that he's not from Australia, he's from New Zealand. That has nothing to do with his looks, though. Wherever he was born, he's still ugly.
John Rhys-Davies -- I don't find him physically attractive. I just don't. But I do love his voice. Mmm. I know him best from his role as the Professor in Sliders. I might have found him mentally attractive in that role, if it weren't for that character's massive ego.
('mentally attractive' is what I call it when I fall for the smart guys. 'physically attractive' generally means I think they have nice eyes, but can mean I think they have a nice face as well. Body types don't enter into my considerations)
Oh, and here's one that I'm not sure has been said:
Tim Allen. Can't stand him, simple as that.

I can name three who are still great despite age, without even thinking:
Judi Dench
Maggie Smith
Helen Mirren [at least recently]
I've never gone for Susan Sarandon, and there's something entirely too masculine about Sigourney Weaver for me, but they both shine in most of their films. The same goes for Stockard Channing, but more so, IMO.

May I suggest that googling for "hollywood mingers" might be a profitable use of time in this thread? (The page title 'From mingers to blingers' made me guffaw with laughter).

Judi Dench and Helen Mirren are both awesome actors. I don't think either was exactly ugly in their youth, it's just that they're older than most Hollywood actresses who sadly find it hard to get interesting roles past 40.
I frankly don't understand the attraction of Tom Cruise. I liked him in Top Gun, but when it came out I was 14 so was that such a surprise? He seems pretty ordinary to me otherwise.
One female men can't seem to agree on at all is Natalie Portman. Is she stunning or is she ordinary? She did get an Academy Award nomination for Closer, which I haven't seen, so I assume she can act... Although to be frank I didn't think much of her performance in Star Wars.

She's gorgeous.
I think Judi Dench is one of my favorite actresses.

I see that everybody is missing out James Cohburn. Not exactly a handsome mug, but he could act!
Telly Sevallas (sp?)
Yaphet Koto
James Earl Jones
Tommy Lee Jones
BTW, dealing with Mark Hamill's Voice Talents, anyone seen Cartoon Networks 'Batman' Animated series? Mark does the voice of The Joker in that, and it wasn't till I manged to see the Credits on that that I learned that!

And nobody has such an evil voice as JEJ. Darth Vader wouldn't be half so sinister without his voice. As the making of documentaries on the classic trilogy box set DVD attest. Prowse really had a pathetic voice for such a big man.

True enough Granth, but I still feel that, after all the work he'c put in, David deserved to be in the Suit at the end of ROtJ when Luke removed the mask.

Indeed. I can't understand why they gave that job to Sebastian Shaw...
Funny how many people were involved in making Darth Vader come alive: David Prowse in the suit, Bob Anderson doing the fight scenes (at least the duel with Obi-wan), James Earl Jones for the voice, and let's not forget Hayden Christensen in RotS.
This thread seems to have strayed a bit off topic...

Owen Wilson :D he rocks! He also has a brother, Luke Wilson who you might have seen as Cameron Diaz's boyfriend in Charlie's Angels. They have another brother too who does a bit of acting, I think, but I can't remember what his name is.

Gotta disagree about Nicholas Cage. I think he's good looking, but I hate his deadpan acting style. I'm also having problems with the idea of certain actors being unattractive. Like almost all of the ones listed so far. I don't think ANYONE has listed one that I would consider to be unattractive in some manner. Mostly what I am seeing is people criticizing acting ability and (dare I say it) expressing jealousy in the manner that those who weren't in the popular group generally do. It's called jealousy. Most people would just about kill to look like Paris Hilton. But she seems to be a vapid, vain, idiotic, stupid and (insert your own description here) and she doesn't deserve her beauty. She should look the same on the outside as she does on the inside.
Ugly actors out there, (not due to changes with age, just always ugly)...
Gene WIlder
Woody Allen
Rob Schneider
Curtis Armstrong
Wallace shawn (Grand Nagus in ST: DS9)
If you don't know who some of these actors are, look them up on [url=http://www.imdb.com]IMDb[/]
FOr all those who simply listed those who they think can't act... this is about looks, not acting ability!

Do you really feel that way about Steve Buscemi (http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0191754/Ss/0191754/7?path=pgallery&path_key=Buscemi,%20Steve)? I don't intend to be cruel about him (he's one of my favourite actors), but it would surprise me if you would honestly describe him as handsome. And he is also a really good actor.

Hey! That's a westcountry accent you're describing there. It's not pathetic - it's just not appropriate to have a scary bad guy delivering lines like this:
"Luke moi boy, Oi aahm your faather."
"E'll join us or die, moi maaster, or Oi'm a monkey's uncle."
"'Ere moi lovely, don' you go underestimatin' the paaahr of the daark soide!"
"C'maander, get oan an' tear this yere boat apaart 'til ye've faand them plaans, an' bring Oi the pris'ners, cos' Oi wants 'em aloive, doan' Oi?"

He's kinda cute in a little boy way. Not a heartthrob but not ugly. But with the right makeup/acting, he's so scary/creepy.

I wasn't thinking of the accent so much as the pitch. He has a really squeaky voice for such a big man. JEJ's bass has just the right rumble to it to be menacing.
Speaking of accents, as I learned mine in Plymouth, it's been described as WC tainted by years of hearing mainly other accents.
