When Lightning strikes and thunder crashes... Do you switch off your PC?
Which is what I'm about to do now...

Storm over... I'm back !
I suppose I'm over cautious but we've had one PC be affected by storms, not terminally but enough to cause a hitch and so I tend to be more cautious now!
Of course, with the laptop, I can just unplug and carry on w**king / gaming anyway!

At home we take the plug off anything sensitive, but here at my student place I don't. I think they have some system against thunderstorm or something... probably.

No thunderstorms on Ascension Island. But I still wouldn't switch off even if we did have thunderstorms; I trust my UPS to handle surges.
Do you only switch it off, or do you also unplug the power and the phone line/cable line?

With the main PC, I used to flip the cable out the back! With the laptop, I'd disconnect everything! Which constitutes power cable and modem!
We don't tend to unplug anything else!

We have a surge protector. Nick used to make me shut down the first flash of lightening, back when we were on dial up. Now,,,, if the power is on, so am I!

Nah I almost never shut it off unless the storm is on the pandemonium level. I'm just stubborn I guess

I have a mains surge protector, but used to unplug the modem from the wall when I was on dial-up; now I have cable broadband, Nah.
But maybe I should? Any expert advice on this?

I'll turn off if i notice the lights flickering. Usually if my cable goes out, my power is soon to follow so at that point i'll start shutting everything down. However, i tend to deal with my aquariums faster than i'd deal with my computer when power looks like its bout to shut off.

If it was a big electrical storm I would turn off and unplug. I had a friend who had lightning strike and knock out his computer and phone line  . If it's a storm in the distance I don't turn off.

Hubby bought massive surge protectors and back-ups so it takes more than a rumble or two. :D I have been known to sit on the computer using a candle so I can see the keyboard.

P. M. D'Washer and his team run a line and a big metal pole out and onto the roof during a storm. The daring scamps.

With the storms we get here in Oklahoma, if I hear thunder, I shut down and unplug everything. If it's in the distance, I'll wait until it gets a little closer, but I usually don't take any chances. :tilt: Our electric goes off way too often in the spring.

Do you have any 'weather' over there? ;)

Blackouts aren't likely to make your computer float to the top....

I usually keep my PC on until the lights start to flicker or Hubby yells at me to turn it off :D Of course, that's before I lost my UPS... so now when it starts lightning I might turn it off sooner. :)

I don't have UPS so at the first sign of trouble I shut down, even though I live in a city where all phone and power cables are underground, so technically I should be safe.
