Sparked by my reply to the DVDs thread, I remember watching certain movies when I was younger, and how much I enjoyed them - at the moment, I can only think of The Fluppy Dogs (cartoon) and Moving (Richard Pryor, Randy Quaid, Dana Carvey)
Anyone else have movies like this they'd like to re-see? :D

There're a few films I've seen and even own on Video but have yet to make it to DVD unfortunately!
The Living End, a film about two guys with HIV who go off the rails somewhat, is one of them. A superb film that's no-doubt somewhere in one of the boxes in the attic!
I noticed that Parting Glances had made it to DVD but only after I'd finally found a copy of it on video! Goping to wait a bit to buy that!
There're more but I just can't think right now...

The cartoon version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
I watched it as a kid in America, and I've been wanting to rewatch it for a while now, but Finland has hardly even heard of Dr.Seuss, so I don't think I'll find it here.

My favorite movie of all time--Flight of the Navigator. :heartbeat:
Came out in 1986 and now can't find it anywhere for a decent price. It's even hard to find at rental stores in my area.
I'm hoping they re-release that movie soon. The moment I see it, I'm going to buy it. :ok:

Amazon.com lists Flight of the Navigator for $14.99 USD.
One I'm waiting for on DVD is Jonathan Livingston Seagull

We've got both How the Grinch Stole Christmas (cartoon version) and Flight of the Navigator on vhs. Just got lucky I guess. The movie I'd love to get my hands on is called Scavanger Hunt. An older comedy with Vincent Price, Cloris Leechman, Scatman Coruthers, Tony Randall, Arnold Schwartzenegger and many more. I've seen it for sale on E-Bay but they have all been somebody coping a rental and selling those. I want a good copy, not something of dubious quality.

OOhh that reminds me, I found on old copy of Oscar on VHS but when I say it's old I mean it's old, and I've watched it several times since I got it - I'd rather have it on DVD, it's got Sylvester Stallone, Tim Curry, Marisa Tomei, Eric's dad from That 70s Show, the princess from Flash Gordon (which by the way I also have on VHS and wouldn't mind having on DVD) and it's a comedy and cracks me up every time I watch it!

A sweet friend just recently recorded copies of Jim Hensons's films "The Dark Crystal" and " Labyrinth" - now Thingy will get to see, enjoy and learn to love 'em as much as I and the rest of my clan does :ok:
Anyone else love Jim Henson's stuff ?
Now I just need to replace the 9 "Storyteller" short-films he made (grouped as 3 on each tape) - THEN life has meaning again :shake:
Oh,
and I think "Emmet Otter's First Christmas" was the only other one he'd made - and while corny, I DID love that one too.......
Anyone got a copy ? :D

I am looking for the original "Cheaper by the Dozen" on dvd. Heck lol I'd even settle for vhs if I could find it. Also "The Happiest Millionaire" I think that was the name.
Cheaper by the Dozen was a movie that I related to, cause I came from a large family, although not as large as that lol. I didn't think the remake did it justice.

Some of the old stuff is coming out on DVD. I'm looking for a TV show. A British comedy called Waiting For God. I never see it on BBCA or PBC. And I can't find a tape or DVD.
I've gotten some older stuff from Critics Choice Video or www.ccvideo.com
Or phone 1-800-367-7765.

I tend to just take what I can find until my favourites happen to turn up, but I have been looking for a decent soundtrack to Some Like it Hot, which I saw last year and loved for the songs. Amazon only has random collections of Marilyn Monroe songs or limited editions of some sort that aren't in stock any more.

One of my favorite old movies is "The Quiet Man," with John Wayne and Maureen O'hara.
A movie that I have been looking for for a long time is "Mrs. Mike." Its about Mary Katherine Flannigan who married a Mounty and their lives in Canada and Alaska in the early 1900s. I haven't seen the movie, but the book is one of my favorites. I can't remember right off who was in the movie, but it was made in the 40s.

It's the old musicals I want on DVD..."Seven Brides For Seven Brothers", "Showboat", "Oklahoma", "Annie Get Your Gun", the original "The King and I" (Yul Brenner was sooo good it that!)

I LOVE Jim Henson's work, Caer! Labyrinth and Dark Crystal are two of my favorites. His Fraggle Rock TV series is one I wish I had copies of! I have a copy of Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas. (Note to self: get that back from daughter's boyfriend!)
I bet I know one that not too many will remember. It was a fantasy movie done hmmmm, must be about 15 years ago or more now. The name of it was Krull. I have a copy, but I think it's broken. The hero in the movie was the son of someone my husband worked with, but I never got to meet him. Now that is an interesting movie!
Ann Marie, I SAW Yul Brynner in the King & I on Broadway in one of his last performances before he died. He was spectacular even then, and will always be one of my favorite actors (and biggest heart-throbs! :shhh: )

I've meant to see Krull for a while, but it only ever seems to be on TV when I'm out.
Btw, I saw Labyrinth on VHS at the second-hand bookstall here at the uni, but I decided not to buy it, as I no longer have a VCR.

Region 1 is basically America. Region 2 is most of the rest of the world, including Europe and Japan. The are also regions 0 and 3 I believe, one of which is Australia and NZ.
Most DVD players you buy these days are multi-region (note: not Playstation 2, as I found out to my annoyance), and most of those that aren't can be programmed to do it with instructions from the internet.

So do I, but Penelope Keith isn't in Waiting For God. It's Stephanie Cole and Graham Crowden, two old people who cause chaos for the manager of a retirement home. It's very funny.

What's region 1?Seven regions (also called locales or zones) have been defined, and each one is assigned a number. Players and discs are often identified by their region number superimposed on a world globe. If a disc plays in more than one region it will have more than one number on the globe.
1: U.S., Canada, U.S. Territories
2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East (including Egypt)
3: Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
5: Eastern Europe (Former Soviet Union), Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
6: China
7: Reserved
8: Special international venues (airplanes, cruise ships, etc.)
Copied the above from here (http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#1.10).

There are three films I would like to get on dvd,
1. Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster. In that film, the personality traits exhibited by Godzilla are a dead ringer for how my father used to be. My father never appreciated that comparison.
2. Pirhana Women of the Avacado Jungle of Death. Because of a song and a discussion in the WLT last year.
3. Bobby Jo and the Outlaw. Personal reasons and need the uncut original version if possible.

I'm still looking for a DVD copy of the 80''s blues film crossroads....not to be confused with the badly acted road chick flick of the same name.
Whilst on the subject, I'd always thought that once a film had been released the title couldn't be used by another one unless it was a remake - copyright thing or something?
Ian
6th February 2005, 12:54 PM
There's no copyright on titles, or names. They can be registered as a trademark but that's the only way to prevent someone else from using them. Copyright would apply if another film with the same title wasn't officially a remake but had a very similar plot.
It's the same with books; there's nothing to stop anyone writing a book called Dragonquest, for example, or featuring a character called F'lar, but if F'lar in the new book was a dragonrider then it would be a copyright issue. There's no copyright on the term Dragonrider either (lots of fantasy stories feature them), or Pern (which is also a place in France), but "Dragonriders of Pern" is a registered trade mark.
