View Full Version : Getting Snowed In!

Lots of wondrous "snowage" happening here. I think Mother Nature saved it all up this winter for one big "drop". It's coming down right now so fast I can barely see the end of the driveway! I've been out and cleared off the vehicles once, but you can hardly tell I've done it. We have quite a long driveway, and rather than shovel it ourselves we decided quite a few years ago it was easier on us physically to pay the fellow who mows the lawn in the summer to whip down here in his 4-wheel drive truck and get it plowed. It takes him all of about 2 minutes.

I've got plenty of food in the house, lots of coffee, the electricity is still working so I can go on-line, and we're all 4 of us here and safe. Can't ask for anything more! Later today I suppose I'll do some more sewing on a cross stitch picture I'm working on, and watch bowling on tv. My daughter bought Mike a new amp for his bass guitar for Valentine's Day so I'm looking forward to some good music! He's ordered her a little silver ring with a diamond (his comment "I just got you a necklace for Christmas. . . you want more jewelry?!") we almost always want jewelry, there's no such thing as "more". ;) If you're being snowed in today, what are you doing (besides being here of course!)

I went to the gym (I slogged through the snow...it was AWESOME!). Now I'm going to write a paper. Doesn't that sound fun?? LOL. But I might go play in the snow later and be 10 years old again.!!!!

My daughter is 22 and just put on her "snow pants" and went out and frolicked in the snow. Nothing wrong with having fun! :ok:

I am completely jealous. The most we've gotten is about 4 inches, not even enough to sled on.

I'm betting it will be a snow day tomorrow. Of course, working in a nursery school/daycare as I do, the nursery school will be closed but the day care will be open and there'll be one or two parents who will drop off their kids because heaven forbid "they" miss one day of work, and it's really "smart" driving your kid in miserable icy conditions to day care?! What makes me laugh are the ones who are teachers! They have the day off because the school system is closed and they still bring their kids to daycare! Well, I guess their attitude is "it's paid for, I'm not losing a penny of what is paid for". So, they bring the kids in and then go back home!

No snow day occurred :(. Oh well.

Oh please send some our way! We've had an inch all winter, and it melted the very next day! It's been cold...but we haven't even been getting 'rain.' We're under burn bans and fire watches half the time out here. :P

Let it snow!

It's supposed to snow here starting tonight and lasting possibly three days :bouncy:
I hope so! The forecasters haven't been too good with the snow predictions lately. In the last two months they have predicted snow a dozen times and we've gotten snow twice.
We too are under fire watches, currently are under "Extreme" fire danger. There was a fire the other day. We shouldn't be having fires at this time of year!

Snowed out conditions don't exist here. I don't remember missing a single day of school in Finland, even when it fell 2 ft or more snow overnight. However, in the UK in 1985 I remember being sent home from school in the middle of the day when there was barely enough snow to make the sidewalks/pavements white.

If it weren't for you saying that there were fire warnings, I'd call you nuts

The warnings came true last night, a fire about 5 miles north, 300 acres so far.

It's pretty much the same here, but about ten years ago the school district learned a lesson. They decided that everything was OK, so they opened school as usual. By lunchtime the snow had fallen so deeply that most parents and the buses couldn't get to the schools. They were stuck with thousands of kids trapped int he schools overnight and had to bring emergency food in to them by snowmobile. Ever since every student is supposed to have a blanket and two days worth of emergency rations at school.

But they don't call a snowday for frivolous reasons. We had a snow day three years ago, when there was 3-7 feet of snow in various parts of the county (3 in east county and 7 in west aka mountain county) and the snowplows were hopelessly outclassed by the storm.

Snow days are more frequent in the mountain portions of the county for obvious reasons. Heck, one of our high schools is adjacent to a ski resort.

Snow days are determined by the school transportation department. If they can't get the buses out to pick up kids, there's no school.

Wow... and I thought the NYC public schools were bad. The blizzard of 96 is really the only snow day(s) I remember having. They were super exciting! We got 2 days off of school (I was in...5th??? grade). I don't think we had any other days off for snow, although there was a hurricane day in high school. It turned out to be a gorgeous day. Very fun. But we'd NEVER go to school if it seemed as if there were any chance of being stuck there.

I hate snow...that's about all I can say.

I'm from North Carolina, on the coast, where it almost never snows. When it does snow it's just a flurry. But I go to school in Erie, PA. I think the snow god hates Erie. Or, more specifically, me. I actually wrote a small story about the snow god once (for the purpose of an away message on AIM) when I was angry about all the snow. It was rather amusing...but we're constantly in 2 ft of snow here. Well, not so much this year, we've actually had a few warm-ish days this winter, it's weird...but last winter sucked royally.

Anyway, just to recap...I really, really hate snow...........

We finally got snow (and ice) here in Oklahoma! :bouncy: We got a whole inch of snow and then a layer of sleet on top of that. Much needed moisture.

I missed it, however, since I was sick in bed the whole weekend. Got up today to see it start melting. Oh well, at least I didn't have to worry about going anywhere.

I might go run around in the snow. Pictures: if I can find the camera. :)

Awww. :( I hope you feel better. Wasn't that lovely snow though! Alas, we didn't get an inch where I am in OK. ;) But it was a beautiful dusting, a half inch where it actually covered the grass. 'So' nice to have the moisture. I hope it lasts! Much better than the grass fires.

Ouch! That's not good! *sends some of what little wetness we have your way* This was the third time we've had precipitation since early December, so alas I can't send more than that.

Thanks! :hugs: I am feeling better...just have a leftover cough.

I'm surprised you guys didn't get more. But at least you got some. And it was pretty while it lasted. Ours was all melted today. Hopefully we won't go so long before we get more.

Glad to hear it. :) And yeah, we got less than most folks, and very little ice. The roads have been clear for days. But at least the wet hung around. Hopefully we get more soon!

You get a snow day for 2.5"??? :faint:

We have ta get at least a foot or more. Last time we had a snow day we got 3 feet out where we lived, it was 5 feet where the bus barn was (where they make the decision).

Yup. Some areas of the world get snow so infrequently they don't know how to handle it when it comes. It's easier, and probably safer, to just cancel everything. Much better than having people out, without snow tires, and absolutely no clue how to drive on snow/ice even if they had them! I can understand that. That's not to say there aren't some "transplanted" residents in those areas who aren't great drivers on ice and snow, with plenty of experience. But for them, it must be even more difficult on the roads, surrounded by those who don't know what to do.

We're supposed to get snow here starting soon this morning. I work in a daycare. Any bets how many of the little ones will be brought to "school" even though the driving is treacherous? Priorities? Bass Ackwards, but that's just my opinion. :disguise:

It takes abot 1cm for chaos to reign on the roads of Britan and a few more to shut the schools (though strictly speaking the university doesn't close)

Would you believe it was 72 on Sunday and 81 on Thursday????

In February, in Colorado for goodness sake, in the middle of what is supposed to be our snowiest time of year? It broke the old high temperature record by 22F!

A week before that it was -15 (also a record breaker) and snowing. :faint:

Colorado weather is completely insane in late winter and spring. Check out this forecast! I went out this morning to take Erin to the school bus and I had to take off my jacket, I was totally comfortable in a tank top and shorts at 7am.

Current Weather Conditions
Clear; 53°

Forecast
Today; Sunny Hi 63°F
*High winds possible with gusts to 80mph
Tonight; Snow Showers Lo 30°F

Wednesday; Snow Hi 35°F
Wednesday; Night Snow Lo 22°F

Thursday; Sunny Hi 52°F
Thursday; Night Snow Lo 28°F

No wonder 'tis the season to get sick!

If we get a snow day, it's usually in spring. We get little storms of frigid white powder during winter, but in spring we get these big wet sloppy dumps of snow.

My older son's tennies died this weekend and we bought him sandals to replace them, so of course we will finally get the snow that's been holding off for so long. At least he still has good snow boots.
