View Full Version : Names too strange for fiction

Every now and then, I come across a name of a real person that I'd quite like to put in one of my stories ... but I don't think I could get away with it because the name is so outlandish or silly.
For example, I found a real, modern-day citizen of Mongolia who goes by the name of Puresuren Kh. No, that's not a typo. His surname is Kh!
There's people like Edward Woodward and Magnus Magnusson, of course. Maybe it's because I didn't grow up with them, but I can't quite keep a straight face when I hear those names.
What examples have you found?

Richard Head owns a farm near us... He uses the typical short version... Not "Rich"... Care to take a guess? Goes right along with ol' Harold Balls up there.:eek2:

Crystal C. Leer. The C stands for Chanda.

In Finland we have a meteorologist called Pekka Pouta (pouta means clear weather, it can be cloudy but there must be no precipitation and no wind beyond a comfortable breeze), and a gardener called Aarno Kasvi (kasvi means plant). There's also at least one person called Anu Saukko (saukko means otter which is kinda funny, but the whole name said together -anusaukko- means anus...)

Not someone I know personally, but WG came across someone called Ophelia Balls...

Some surnames I've seen at work (I work for Royal Mail in the sorting office, for those who don't know): Dick, Newdick, Didlick, Standlick, Hooker (a woman), & Handslip, as well as Mrs P.Ong. You couldn't make them up!

Just had a new hire here with the surname of Dorko.

Mike Hunt always got a laugh here.

And, I think this one's an urban legend, but a friend of mine swears her husband worked with a guy named Adolph Mycok.

As for the surname of Kh, the company I work for has a lot of international hires. We have many with the surname of A, B, C, just about every single letter of the alphabet.

Except "X". Now, I find that funny.

I went to school with a Wayne Kerr. And my English teacher at a completely different school had also once taught a different Wayne Kerr.

You'ld never guess her parents were hippies out of the late sixties early seventies.

Please tell me it's not capitalized like that as well! It's bad enough as it is.

 Close, but no cigar, m'dear. There's a Japanese drama/comedy/action movie titled Moon Child.

Once knew a girl whose parents had named her Stormy, last name Fearsom. :erm:

And then there's Frank Zappa's son, Dweezil (named after a hamster Frank had as a kid) and his daughter, Moon Unit...

Had a few new hires start this week.

One's Ebony Ivory.

The other is Luke Laurin. Now, for many of you - that may not seem all that strange. But anyone who grew up with the news of General Hospital in the 1980's would know why I think Luke Laurin is odd.

Ouch. My sister's HORSE is called Suede.

Some parents should be shot!

The worst name I ever came across was someone who worked at an estate agency when we were house hunting. Krystyne, she was called, or something equally unforgiveable along those lines...

Well, Miss Orchard married Mr Flower - She was a foster-mother of mine when I was about 10.

It's a perfectly respectable name in it's own culture, but Fakmi sounds awful when it's yelled across a swimming pool. I'd have found an alternative or a nickname to call the child when I moved into an English-speaking country.

In order to keep this in the pg range...

A friend of mine who used to be a door to door salesman talked to a man named Phineas Pen--.. the last two letters are exactly as implied.

Poor guy, having to deal with those initials.

There is also a singer called CeCe Peniston. With her name, she should be a porn star! It must be real, I doubt anyone would use such a weird pseudonym...

Two celebs (or their wives) are in labor as I type. Penn Jillette's wife Emily is having a boy named Zolton Penn Jillette (their daughter is Moxie). And of course Brangelina is having a child who will likely end up with an odd name.

Zolton was Emily's maiden name, so it may not really be all that strange, but it certainly isn't a name you hear every day.

My very first job one of the people who worked there had the last name Hickey. That's not so bad until you realize his first name was Richard, and he went by the short version that rhymes with Rick.

Then there was a boss I had named Richard Bender, and lord help anybody who shortened it to anything but Rick.

Shiloh. Not bad at all when you think it could have been another Apple...

It's been posted on another thread somewhere, but never mind. It's only a matter of time before Shiloh Pitt turns into Piloh Shitt. Can't wait until the kid hits middle school!
